The agreement between Volaris and Viva (Viva Aerobus) that will create the Más Vuelos Group, although surprising, was necessary in Mexico; moreover, it will result in a giant of Latin American aviation, however, it could create a duopoly where Grupo Aeroméxico will have to implement strategies to remain competitive , agreed specialists in the aviation sector.

Ricardo Dadoo, president of Logistics Dadoo , considered that this announcement creates an oligopolistic situation that, although it was indicated that they will remain separate, once they have the required approvals in both Mexico and the United States, the operations will be integrated, which would be happening in three years.

“They will coordinate schedules, set fares, offer discounts, and achieve significant commercial and cost synergies. This will generate a return on investment for Volaris’ owners within three to five years, something they wouldn’t have achieved with any other available option. Volaris secured a great deal because the Viva brand, its profitability, productivity per aircraft, and the commercial synergies it has through passenger buses make it more valuable. However, a 50/50 merger is very difficult to believe and conceive,” he told T21.

He mentioned that due to the lack of interest from airline investors, as well as from other companies to buy Volaris, among other circumstances, the shareholders of this company opted for a merger with another Mexican airline .

Fabricio Cojuc, aviation consultant and co-founder of the Altitude Aviation Leaders podcast , commented that the union of both airlines will result in a giant of Latin American aviation , with more than 250 A320 family aircraft and more than 60 million passengers annually.

Furthermore, the efficiencies that will be achieved will translate into an improvement of the low-fare model, which is the backbone of Viva and Volaris’ success.

“Together, the two airlines will be able to develop some secondary airports in Mexico as regional hubs and grow others into major key cities, thus expanding air service coverage beyond their individual capacities,” he stressed.

Ricardo Dadoo added that this new alliance will prompt Grupo Aeroméxico to explore options to remain competitive. “Aeroméxico’s product is the best of the three, but Viva has found its niche and has been very well received, maintaining excellent relationships with its suppliers and employees. For passengers, the addition of Volaris is excellent news.”

According to Grupo Financiero Monex , the new group aims to generate economies of scale that reduce fleet ownership costs , improve access to capital, and strengthen the financial profile—critical factors in an environment marked by supply chain pressures and rising maintenance and engine costs.

“Both airlines emphasized that they will share an operating model based on point-to-point flights and low fares, which will facilitate commercial and technical integration. Compatibility in fleet, infrastructure, and reservation systems anticipates substantial synergies in costs and distribution. From our perspective, this move positions the group to compete more aggressively against regional and global rivals in a market where the recovery of air traffic and the expansion of tourism remain key catalysts,” he stated.

Looking ahead to 2026, he considered that the focus should be on how consolidation will allow the new company to reduce some vulnerability to operational shocks , the expansion of the Ultra Low Cost Carrier model, savings from joint purchases, optimization of modern fleets, among others.

Furthermore, this merger should generate greater domestic and international connectivity , with new operational bases and potential agreements that contribute to greater exposure in the region.

Also, an equitable shareholding structure and the expectation of operational synergies in the medium term , although the challenge will be that the transaction is still subject to conditions and regulatory approvals, expectations on market perception and rating agencies.

In 2026, airlines could earn $41 billion , 3.7% more than estimated; however, bottlenecks in aircraft availability will persist, one of the most significant limitations to the industry’s growth, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicted .

“Airlines are expected to generate a net margin of 3.9% and a profit of $41 billion in 2026. This is very welcome news given the headwinds facing the industry: rising bottleneck costs, geopolitical conflicts, sluggish global trade, and regulatory burdens, among others. Airlines have managed to build resilience in absorbing shocks to their businesses, which is delivering stable profitability,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

According to its most recent analysis of the global outlook, it reiterated that the expected net profit will be greater than the $39.5 billion of 2025, setting a new record .

It also anticipates that load factors will continue to reach record highs, with airlines expected to fill 83.8% of all seats during 2026.

He projected that cargo volumes will reach 71.6 million tons next year , representing a 2.4% increase compared to 2025. In this regard, he explained that the performance of this segment is “especially interesting”.

“ The resilience of air cargo has been especially impressive . As trade flows adapt to a protectionist tariff regime in the United States, air freight has been the hero of global trade , driven in part by robust e-commerce and semiconductor shipments that support the surge in artificial intelligence (AI) investments. The critical role of air cargo is in the spotlight as the global economy adjusts to new realities,” Walsh said.

Regarding supply chain challenges , he indicated that they continue to limit airlines’ ability to meet consumer demand for air transport, although some improvements are expected for next year, the backlog in aircraft orders will continue to grow.

High load factors and stable performance are partly attributed to supply chain issues. However, the limiting impact of these challenges on growth remains a drag on airline profitability, the executive noted.

Although new aircraft deliveries began to increase in late 2025 and production is expected to ramp up in 2026, demand is projected to outpace aircraft and engine availability. Normalizing the structural mismatch between airline requirements and production capacity is unlikely before 2031–2034, due to irreversible losses in deliveries over the past five years and a record order backlog.

“Airlines are feeling the impact of aerospace supply chain challenges across their entire business. The biggest challenges are high leasing costs, reduced schedule flexibility, delays in sustainability progress, and increased reliance on suboptimal aircraft types. Airlines are missing opportunities to strengthen their commercial revenue, improve their environmental performance, and better serve customers,” explained Willie Walsh.

To boost and strengthen the growth of regional airports, they need certain subsidies, although this requires modifying their concession titles, according to specialists from the Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) and the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) .

Raúl Revuelta, director of GAP, commented that these types of subsidies are being offered between companies and could take the form, for example, of a discount on a route like Los Mochis-Manzanillo.

“It’s a regulatory issue. Currently, airport group concessions are individual and don’t allow for support. This is defined by the concession title and isn’t a matter of regulation. It’s about making a clear proposal that could be applicable to any group, both private and public,” he emphasized.

In an interview following his participation in ACI Airport Day Mexico , he stated that this is an issue being analyzed by concessionaires in the country.

Ricardo Dueñas, director of OMA, explained that this type of subsidy would not be provided by the government, but that the country’s largest airports could serve as a lever to boost smaller infrastructure .

“We have to work together; all the elements are on the table to be able to do this. It’s a job for the airlines and the airport groups to maintain very good communication, but the elements are there to be able to detonate them,” he said.

In this regard, he specified that of the 13 airports managed and operated by OMA, Monterrey would be the most suitable, as it is the largest in the group and accounts for almost half of its total traffic.

Meanwhile, Vice Admiral Eric Mario Barrera, technical corporate director of the Marina Airport Group, highlighted the need to invest in airport infrastructure, but also to encourage airlines to land there.

“Mexico has a lot of room for regional aviation, and we’re not giving it enough importance. We have 60 airports, but airlines don’t reach all of them,” he emphasized.

David Sandoval Martínez, deputy general manager of Grupo Mundo Maya Airports , mentioned that in his case the development of incentives was decisive for the arrival of airlines.

He explained that these types of incentives are granted annually , and have thereby boosted regional aviation; he also indicated that the incentives apply to airport services, parking, aprons, among others.

“We identified this need, especially in a jungle region. The connectivity and commitment of governments generates a focus of attention, and although the results were positive, the momentum and incentives are there; they were developed over a three-year period,” he noted.

The low-cost airline said it will resume its scheduled flights to Acapulco next Saturday , while flights to Zihuatanejo will resume this Friday.

Aeromexico, for its part, confirmed that it has cancelled 18 flights between Wednesday and Thursday, and has therefore activated its customer protection policy.

Airlines in Mexico have been affected due to the global failure of the security services provided by CrowdStrike to Microsoft systems , after what was mentioned to be a defective update, since this situation has impacted their reservation systems.

Viva Aerobus reported that the fall has an impact on documentation for domestic flights , although most of these are operating, however, it stated that there will be some delays in them.

Through his social networks, he specified that he canceled his international flights scheduled for this Friday with departure 00:01 at 4:59 p.m.

“At the moment we are unable to make changes to reservations and process refunds. Once the systems are established, we will inform you what the procedure to follow will be to obtain the support you require,” he said.

Derived from the same problem, he stated that he will temporarily not be able to sell tickets. “We hope that in the next few hours all operations and sales will be restored in all our channels,” he said.

For its part, Volaris mentioned that its reservation system is operating intermittently.

Likewise, through their networks, the Mexico City International Airport ( AICM) and the Central North Airport Groups (OMA), the Pacific and the Southeast (Asur) asked travelers to be aware of the information they generate. airlines about flight status.

Mara Lezama, governor of Quintana Roo, revealed the damages that the Cancun Airport belonging to Asur has registered.

Aeroméxico reported that so far it operates normally and without any cancellations. However, it is monitoring customers who are affected by the connections they have with other airlines.

Meanwhile, the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) stated that this failure did not cause any impact on the radars and air navigation systems in Mexico, due to the use of its own tools and systems that are protected against external interference. .

Through the Mexican Airspace Navigation Services (Seneam), the respective security protocols remain activated, in support of all commercial airlines whose national and international flights may have been affected.

“Some airlines have problems in their systems due to the drop in Microsoft services globally, which is why they ask travelers to take precautions and go to airports nationwide in advance for the documentation process, check -in and boarding,” he mentioned.

Both the SICT and the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) took measures to expedite the dispatch of flights, due to failures in the computer systems.

Who is CrowdStrike?

According to its website, CrowdStrike defines itself as a cybersecurity company that protects and enables the people, processes and technologies that power modern businesses.

Their systems protect their customers’ most critical risk areas (endpoints and cloud workloads, identity and data) from today’s adversities and also stop breaches.

Its Falcon platform leverages real-time attack indicators, threat intelligence on evolving adversary techniques , and rich enterprise-wide telemetry to deliver hyper-precise detections, automated protection and remediation, elite threat hunting, and observability. priority of vulnerabilities.
