Jorge Chávez International Airport , located in Lima, Peru, seeks to increase its infrastructure and enhance the use of technology for air cargo movement, with a focus on the Mexican market.

Paola Loayza, Business Manager of Real Estate and Cargo at Lima Airport Partners , mentioned that they are working on an analysis that will allow them to know the actions and investments necessary to carry out these projects .

Regarding technology, he explained that they are seeking a greater exchange of data, mainly with customs, which “is the most important player in the chain, but also with logistics operators, agents, terminals and the airport.”

“The diagnostic will allow us to calculate and measure the efficiency we want to achieve. If we don’t do it, we won’t be able to achieve the volumes we expect, because the market demands efficiency and optimal times for the logistics chain,” he stated in an interview with T21.

For his part, Joseff Monzon, the airport’s Cargo and Logistics leader, emphasized that there is currently a dual process in cargo handling , both digital and physical, so they intend to optimize processes and digitize those that are manual.

Paola Loayza recalled that in June 2025 they inaugurated the new passenger terminal, where 100% of the operations were transferred, which provided greater capacity for cargo operations and for the construction of more warehouses for cargo.

“At the infrastructure level we will not have any restrictions, quite the contrary, we have this whole window in terms of square meters with parking positions to be able to grow, in addition the airport already has two runways, which makes for a significant increase in capacity,” he explained.

In that regard, Loayza reiterated that prior to the new terminal there were certain restrictions on cargo movement, because operations were mostly for passengers and there were no schedules to serve cargo ships.

“Now that we have moved the operation, the capacity for cargo aircraft has fully opened up and we have no restrictions, and they have always been within our planning,” he stated.

Joseff Monzon stated that they have the infrastructure to handle the volume of cargo they currently manage , in addition to a recent award of a warehouse that will increase capacity by up to 70 percent.

Loayza emphasized that the commitment to the cargo market goes hand in hand with Cosco Shipping , the operator of the port of Chancay, and Anjun Logistics, after being awarded the new warehouse that will allow for greater cargo handling and position itself as a logistics hub in the region.

“We don’t want a cannibalization of warehouses, but rather an increase in cargo volume, which positions us as a logistics hub in the region, so that from Lima we can distribute to different parts of South America, starting with Guarulhos, Brazil, where Anjun has its operations today, but they have growth plans to different countries in South America,” he said.

He explained that they are also targeting the Mexican market , since currently cargo volume is low and only handled in the cargo holds of airplanes. “It’s a strategic point and a connection to Asia. We will await future discussions to achieve that connectivity.”

In 2025, Jorge Chávez International Airport closed with a handling of 267,000 tons of cargo , with agricultural exports being the segment with the most movement – asparagus, mangoes, blueberries, among others – destined mainly for Madrid, Miami, Bogotá and Asia.

The trade balance was distributed as 54% for exports and 46% for imports, “it also comes from the same places, we are more America with stopovers that go to Europe, Asia or Mexico.”

In the case of e-commerce , a segment that grew by 16.5% last year thanks to the arrival of Amazon and Temu , he noted that it reaches Lima via Miami. Therefore, as a result of this growth, they have allocated a warehouse with an investment of $20 million.

“We recently awarded a 6,800 square meter warehouse to a consortium of Cosco with a Brazilian operator of an air cargo terminal at Guarulhos Airport, which handles 50% of e-commerce . Cosco is also the operator of the port of Chancay. With this consortium, we manage incremental cargo through multimodal transport by sea, land, and air,” Loayza emphasized.

He commented that the expansion plans for the cargo area, which will allow for more warehouses, will be put out to tender between 2026 and 2027 .
