In this context, the customs broker not only remains a key player, but also expands his role as a strategic advisor, logistics integrator, and facilitator of regulatory compliance.

Over the past three decades, the profile of the customs broker has evolved radically.

“Thirty years ago, we used to type requests on a typewriter. Today, technology is a fundamental part of our practice,” explained Claudio Silva Herzog Urrutia .

In an interview with T21 , he emphasized that today’s customs broker not only manages clearance, but also actively participates in logistical decision-making, recommends optimal transport conditions and costs, advises on Incoterms, and collaborates with stakeholders such as airlines, insurers, business chambers, and authorities.

“We have become a core part of the logistics chain,” he said.

In this context, and as a customs broker with 30 years of experience, Claudio Silva Herzog is seeking the presidency of the Confederation of Associations of Customs Brokers of the Mexican Republic (CAAAREM) .

Claudio Silva operates in the customs offices of Mexico City International Airport (AICM) , Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) , Veracruz and Pantaco.

Throughout his career, he has not only been a customs agent, but has also held various positions within the industry. He served as president of the Metropolitan Customs Agents Association (AAADAM) from 2018 to 2020, treasurer of CAAAREM from 2021 to 2023, and currently serves as the organization’s secretary.

Now he’s seeking to lead a project he’s called “For You, For All,” which, he said, has been built from the ground up, listening to every local association since the start of his campaign on April 1.

“I want to give back to my profession a little of what it has given me. I have the experience, the background, and the willingness to give my time to others,” he said.

An agenda with a comprehensive vision

Claudio Silva Herzog’s project is structured around five strategic axes that address both immediate and long-term challenges.

The first, specifically as prevention and protection , seeks to protect the figure of the customs agent, protect the patent and give continuity to the profession through the use of technology that minimizes human error and strengthens the legal defense of the guild.

As a second point, connection and solutions , proposes a closer and more decisive confederation, which works as a team with the associations to provide more efficient and timely services .

On the other hand, with strategic influence it aims to broaden the voice of the union in the definition of public policies, strengthening its presence before authorities and high-level business organizations .

With a shared commitment , it will promote certification programs, support for at-risk cases, and explore new business niches, fostering the growth and diversification of the sector.

Finally, with a view to the future , it will promote the training of new generations of customs agents with digital skills and a global vision, encouraging disruptive ideas and greater professionalization.

In this regard, Claudio Silva Herzog emphasized to this media outlet that the new generations have many of the fresh ideas they want to implement and promote.

“I want to give the new generations an important space to build a better future for everyone,” he said.

To this end, he explained that he intends to hold roundtable discussions to listen to young people who come to the industry with fresh ideas.

Furthermore, he acknowledged that the current situation requires ongoing dialogue with Mexico’s National Customs Agency (ANAM) , the Tax Administration Service (SAT) , and other regulatory agencies to ensure faster, safer, and more transparent operations.

He asserted that technologies such as artificial intelligence are not a stand-alone solution, but rather a tool that must be integrated with a strategic vision to improve processes.

Claudio Silva Herzog wants to leave a positive legacy for the union if he becomes head of CAAAREM.

“Claudio gave his all, kept his promises, listened to everyone, and gave his all for the union. I don’t want to be remembered as just another president, but rather for having left something that truly shaped our administration,” he emphasized.

The election of the next president of CAAAREM will be decided at the Annual General Assembly , scheduled for July 18.

Until then, Claudio Silva Herzog will continue touring Mexico, promoting a program that combines experience, innovation, and deep commitment to the industry.
