The National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported that Tropical Storm Francine , which formed in the Gulf of Mexico from potential Tropical Cyclone Six, continues to intensify , which will produce very heavy rains at times extraordinary in several states of the country, as well as very strong gusts of wind, high waves and possible waterspouts on the coasts of Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Tabasco.
He specified that at 12:00 hours, the storm was located approximately 300 kilometers (km) east-southeast of La Pesca, Tamaulipas, and 285 km south-southeast of the mouth of the Rio Grande, the border of Mexico with the United States, with winds of 95 kilometers per hour (km/h), gusts of 110 km/h and moving north-northwest at seven km/h.
In its first report, it specified that at 09:00 hours on Monday, Francine was in the same position in La Pesca, but 395 km southeast of the mouth of the Rio Grande, with maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour (km/h), gusts of 100 km/h and moving north-northwest at seven km/h.
“In the next few hours, Francine, in interaction with frontal system number 1, tropical wave number 21 and the entry of humid air from the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, will cause extraordinary rainfall (greater than 250 millimeters [mm]) in regions of Tamaulipas, torrential rains (150 to 250 mm) in areas of Veracruz and intense rains (75 to 150 mm) in areas of Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Puebla,” he said.
He indicated that the same systems will cause very heavy rainfall in Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí and Tabasco; heavy rainfall in Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tlaxcala and Yucatán, and periods of showers that will increase the probability of precipitation in the center of the Mexican Republic.
“The rains could be accompanied by electrical discharges and strong gusts of wind. The most intense rainfalls could cause landslides, an increase in the levels of rivers and streams, as well as overflows and flooding in low-lying areas of the aforementioned states,” he said.
In view of the rain, wind and waves, the population was urged to heed the warnings of the SMN and follow the recommendations of Civil Protection. The next warning will be after 3:00 p.m. on Monday.
