After US President Donald Trump said the day before that his partners in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) have not respected this agreement, and warned that the next review would be to “adjust or terminate it,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum indicated that “so far we have no other sign that the treaty is going to disappear.”
During her morning press conference this Wednesday, Sheinbaum emphasized that talks between Mexican and U.S. authorities are continuing, as they continue to work within the framework of the treaty.
“In the discussions we have with the secretaries of both Finance and Commerce, we continue to work within the USMCA. So much so that we, along with Canada, were favored in that most products do not have tariffs under the USMCA, so that’s our interpretation,” he explained.
Sheinbaum also emphasized that Mexico is prepared to address any circumstances in the coming months.
“Mexico is preparing for a scenario like this. I believe we need to take things step by step, as we have done so far, with a cool head, as we say, and we negotiate little by little, in close coordination and communication with the United States government,” he stated.
He explained that Trump’s concern does not stem directly from the USMCA, but rather from exports made under the Most Favored Nation principles established by the World Trade Organization (WTO) .
In this regard, the Mexican president acknowledged that her counterpart from the northern neighbor is right to point out that some Mexican exported products do not comply with the rules of origin of the USMCA; however, she clarified that these exports remain legal under the WTO framework .
At the conference, he emphasized that Trump considered the USMCA a “very effective” agreement and stressed that it will be reviewed in 2026, which could indicate that he has no intention of terminating it.
Sheinbaum also highlighted the economic integration of the three USMCA countries, which has lasted more than 30 years.
It’s worth remembering that on May 6, Trump declared the USMCA to be “very effective”; however, he accused his partners of “not respecting it,” warning that it would soon be renegotiated to “adjust or terminate it.”
“It’s been very effective, and it continues to be very effective, but people have to respect it, and that’s been a problem. People haven’t respected it,” the leader of Canada’s northern neighbor said in a meeting with Mark Carney , Prime Minister of Canada, at the White House .
According to the Ministry of Economy (SE) , the USMCA is the best deal North America has ever had, as it employs 17 million people regionally, generates approximately $3.1 million per minute, and represents 30% of global GDP .
