Just hours before “Liberation Day,” when US President Donald Trump will announce his plan for reciprocal tariffs, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum held a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney , with whom she spoke about trade and sovereignty.
According to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, the call was ” productive ” and discussed the importance of strengthening the trade and investment relationship between the two nations.
During the conversation, Carney and Sheinbaum stressed the need to protect North America’s competitiveness while respecting the sovereignty of each country, the Canadian government added .
Carney told Sheinbaum that Canada will combat “unjustified trade measures,” referring to the tariffs the United States will impose in the coming hours, and that he is interested in increasing trade with Mexico.
Both leaders also highlighted the importance of continuing to promote economic integration in the region.
For its part, on its X account, the Mexican Government reported on the conversation that Sheinbaum had with Carney, in which both agreed to maintain dialogue and indicated their commitment to the economic integration of North America.
This Tuesday, Sheinbaum announced that she had a telephone conversation planned with Carney, and emphasized that there is a good relationship with Canada “and there will continue to be a good relationship with Canada.”
It’s worth remembering that the conversation between the two political figures took place one day after Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on several countries, including Mexico and Canada, his largest trading partners in the region and members of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) .
