The port of Lázaro Cárdenas was closed at noon on Wednesday as a safety measure due to the remnants of “John” that are intensifying into a tropical storm off the coast of Guerrero.
The Regional Port Captaincy of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, issued a nautical notice declaring the port closed to large and small vessels.
John hit the coasts of Oaxaca and Guerrero on September 23, making landfall as a Category 2 hurricane , although it weakened over time.
The remnants of John are currently causing heavy to intense rainfall, development of squalls and/or waterspouts, high seas and waves, and ingress of seawater into low-lying areas.
“Boats docked within the port area are advised to reinforce ropes as a precautionary measure against strong wind gusts (8 knots with gusts of 10 knots), and should take extreme precautions, as should the coastal population due to flooding, rising rivers and high waves (7 to 9 feet high),” the notice reads.
The port of Lázaro Cárdenas is the second most important on the Mexican Pacific coast , behind Manzanillo, due to its commercial connection with the Asian market, where there has been an upward trend in the import of containerized goods.
In the period from January to August of this year, the port of Lázaro Cárdenas had operated one million 586 thousand 838 20-foot containers (TEU), in import and export maneuvers, resulting in an increase of 34.9%, compared to the same period in 2023, according to statistics from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM).
