Last August, theft from rail transport increased by 277% compared to the same period in 2023, reported the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) .
According to the document Pulso del Sistema Ferroviario Mexicano , during this period 317 reports of robberies were registered , compared to 84 on an interannual basis.
The states with the highest total number of reports were Guanajuato with 82, Coahuila with 33 and Jalisco with 27.
“The border states in the north of the country, specifically Coahuila, Nuevo León and Sonora, have the highest concentration of reports in this region. This is attributed to the operational dynamics of international rail traffic, given that these entities are key points for the transit of goods between Mexico and the United States,” said the ARTF.
He specified that of the total number of reports, only 53 complaints have been filed with the competent authority, which may contain one or several cases of theft of products/cargo, fuel, rolling stock, signal and track components.
In this regard, during the month in question the most stolen products correspond to the subgroups of Grains, seeds and their derivatives, with 18.5% of incidents, those classified as Other industrial products 16.6% and Construction material 16 percent.
This means that corn was the most stolen product, followed by wheat, as well as unspecified accessories and controls, and cement.
