The Rail Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) revealed that in the period January-April 2024, 576 reports of railway accidents were registered in Mexico, which compared to the same period last year suffered an increase of 55.2 percent.
In the document Safety Pulse April 2024 , it was mentioned that, of the total, 274 or 47.5%, correspond to level crossings, related to vehicle collision and impact with the train , which presents an increase of 16.5% year-on-year. .
According to the ARTF, 69 events occurred last April compared to 59 in the same month last year, which translated into an increase of 16.9% compared to the same period in 2023.
While the states with the highest number of reports of vehicle collisions in that month alone were:
- Guanajuato (12 reports – 17.39%).
- Jalisco (11 reports – 15.94%).
- Nuevo León (9 reports – 13.04%).
According to the information reported, the main cause of this type of reports is the “driver’s violation of the traffic laws that regulate road crossings.”
Of all the reports registered in this area, 10 injuries and no deaths were recorded.
While of the 576 reports, 213 (36.8%) correspond to Group II Railway equipment, infrastructure and operation, everything related to damage to facilities, derailment, objects on the track and loss of power. Although compared to January-April 2023, this had a decrease of 11.8%, going from 59 to nine events.
Meanwhile, 88 reports (15.2%) belong to the group of Death, injury and others, classified as Group III by the ARTF, corresponding to a body on the road/right of way and a person run over. And only one report belongs to the category of Hazardous Materials or Waste, related to leaks or spills.
