In the first 11 months of the year, the port of Manzanillo set a record in the movement of commercial cargo, registering a total of three million 590 thousand 266 TEU (20-foot containers) , which is the unit of measurement used in maritime foreign trade, which represented an increase of 6.1% compared to the same period last year.
This was reported by the National Port System Administration (Asipona) Manzanillo , of the Navy Secretariat . In its monthly report, it indicates that, of the total cargo moved, 44% corresponded to imports of goods and products, 41% to exports and 15% to transshipment.
Specifically, imports totaled, from January to November, one million 562 thousand TEU , almost 14% higher than the same period in 2023. The total number of container boxes transported was 891 thousand, 13% higher than the previous year.
Exports also increased , with 1.48 million TEUs of cargo in this activity, 12% more annually. As for containers, they totaled 842 thousand, an increase of 11 percent.
By type of cargo, containers accounted for 73% of cargo in motion , with an annual increase of 5%, followed by general loose cargo, with 14%; mineral bulk, with 10%, and agricultural bulk, with 3 percent.
Asipona also highlighted that this year, the four highest months in total cargo movement in the history of Manzanillo were reached, recorded in October, March, November and August.
It is also worth noting that three vessels measuring more than 390 metres in length have arrived at the port in regular service, the largest vessels ever to reach Mexican shores: the APL Fullerton, measuring 398 metres, and the CMA CMG Alexander von Humboldt and Marco Polo, measuring 396 metres each.
The report also highlights that the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) on ships arriving in Manzanillo represents a step towards more sustainable navigation, in line with global efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of maritime transport.
