In 2020, the decline in maneuvers for the automotive industry began at the port of Tuxpan , specifically in the movement of loading or unloading new cars.
Subsequent years showed no improvement. But his statistics could change this year .
In the first nine months of 2024, this Veracruz port has operated 72,841 new vehicles , mostly imported, or 183.4% more than in the same period of 2023 when it only registered 25,701 cars, according to data from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM) of the Ministry of the Navy .
This year’s figure already exceeds the 45,166 cars registered by the port of Tuxpan in all of 2023.
He also noted that before 2024, operations in previous years had focused mainly on exports.
The main port operator is Tuxpan Port Terminal (TPT) , owned by SSA Marine México , which has managed the container terminal since 2016, but where it can also operate general cargo and Roll on-Roll off (RoRo) cargo for the automotive industry.
TPT has a static capacity of 2,050 units and a dynamic capacity of 74,825 units per year , according to the port terminal’s website.
Tuxpan is not the only Mexican port where this company, belonging to the American Carrix Group , has invested in terminals specialized in the handling of new cars .
In Lázaro Cárdenas (Pacific) and in Veracruz (Gulf of Mexico) is where an automotive “gold mine” has been found , as these are the main ports in the country with operations for the automotive industry and where a large volume of zero kilometer units are handled.
Pacific ports have witnessed an increase in the import of vehicles of Asian origin, mainly Lázaro Cárdenas and Mazatlán.
SSA Marine México has been present in the country since 1994. It arrived at the dawn of the newly installed Ports Law (1993).
But Tuxpan only handled 6.6% of all the vehicles that the ports in the Gulf of Mexico operated in their entirety in the period January-September 2024.
All of them add up to one million 097 thousand 709 vehicles until last September , that is, 6.7% more than in the same period of 2023.
Meanwhile, port statistics indicate that, from January to September of this year, all ports totaled 1,742,940 units (+4.4% at an annual rate).
