Acapulco airport in Guerrero state closed operations on Thursday due to damage caused by Category 1 Hurricane John , and several airlines have reported the cancellation of flights to and from the Guerrero resort.
Volaris announced that 16 flights will be affected and will no longer be operated between Thursday and Friday, originating in Mexico City, Tijuana, Querétaro, Guadalajara, and vice versa.
The low-cost airline said it will resume its scheduled flights to Acapulco next Saturday , while flights to Zihuatanejo will resume this Friday.
Aeromexico, for its part, confirmed that it has cancelled 18 flights between Wednesday and Thursday, and has therefore activated its customer protection policy.
Viva Aerobus stated that the effects of this natural phenomenon were mainly on flights to and from Puerto Escondido, Huatulco, Villahermosa, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Oaxaca, Tapachula, Zihuatanejo and Acapulco. For this reason, it cancelled two flights from Mexico City to Zihuatanejo and vice versa for today.
According to the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) , the Acapulco International Airport suspended arrival and departure flight operations starting at 8:40 a.m. this Thursday, due to the weather conditions caused by the effects of Hurricane John. This situation will continue until conditions improve.
He explained that the area surrounding the accesses to this terminal is affected by flooding and debris that interrupt the flow of passengers seeking to arrive or leave this area, so users are urged to remain attentive to official information from the airlines.
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported that “John” remains a Category 1 hurricane off the coast of Michoacán. At 3:00 p.m. Central Mexico time, it was located approximately 75 kilometers (km) southwest of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, and 230 km southeast of Manzanillo, Colima.
It maintains maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (km/h), gusts of 150 km/h and is moving northwest at 4 km/h.
In addition, he said that due to its wide circulation, it will generate rain in regions of Colima, Michoacán and Guerrero; torrential rain in Oaxaca ; intense rain in Jalisco, in addition to reinforcing the probability of strong to intense rain in the center, east and southeast of the Mexican Republic.
It will also generate wind gusts of 100 to 120 km/h, waves of two to four meters high and conditions for the formation of waterspouts on the coasts of Colima, Guerrero and Michoacán, as well as wind gusts of 80 to 100 km/h and waves of two to four meters high on the coasts of Jalisco and Oaxaca.
The SMN of the National Water Commission (Conagua) , in coordination with the United States National Hurricane Center, maintains a surveillance zone for hurricane effects.
