The Ministry of Economy (SE) announced this Friday that it requested the United States government to exempt Mexican exports of bifacial solar panels from the safeguard measure implemented by the US government.
The safeguard temporarily limits imports , which can take the form of a tariff or a quantitative restriction; This measure was taken by the United States government in 2018.
In this context, the Secretary of Economy, Raquel Buenrostro, sent a letter to the United States trade representative, Katherine Tai, requesting the urgent need for Mexican exports to be exempted from this measure, which had already been studied in 2022 as measure to strengthen North American supply chains .
“Secretary Buenrostro stressed that such restrictions could result in the closure of factories that are part of the supply chain in North America, which would lead to the loss of hundreds of specialized jobs. This situation would contravene the objectives shared by both governments of protecting jobs in the region and promoting the transition towards sustainable energies,” reads the statement released by Economía.
Likewise, Buenrostro highlighted in his letter the need to resolve this matter in strict accordance with the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC ), taking into consideration the antecedents in this matter under the same framework, with the aim of reaching an agreement that benefits the workers of both countries without the need to escalate the dispute to instances in which both economies would be affected.
