This Wednesday, the Halcón 2 was presented , the first aircraft manufactured in Mexico, which was manufactured by the company Horizontec , in Celaya, Guanajuato, an event that Marcelo Ebrard, head of the Ministry of Economy (SE) , described as “historic” for Mexican aviation.
“Today, certificate 001 is being issued for an aircraft manufactured and designed in Mexico. This is an aircraft made in Mexico, hence the 001. Aircraft have not been produced in our country since at least 1957,” he emphasized.
At the event, the Secretary of Economy noted that this project has been 11 years in the making. “We are very pleased with this; it represents Mexico’s return to manufacturing its own aircraft.”
The aircraft received the Light Sport Aircraft Type Approval Certificate , which endorses it as an aircraft of this type.
“This new aircraft, you see, is the new trend. The trend today in aviation is toward less complex aircraft, much more democratized designs, because otherwise, until a few years ago, until very recently, everything was the well-known brands you recognize, and it was almost impossible to obtain approval for an aircraft,” the federal official explained.
He stated that these types of aircraft are lighter and use new materials, reflecting technological innovation, “and to give you an idea, this plane costs three times less than a used Cessna.”
The operating cost per hour, according to Ebrard, is almost four times lower than any other aircraft.
“This is an aircraft with a considerable range, easily more than a thousand kilometers, a thousand and one hundred kilometers, and its fuel consumption is the most efficient , meaning it’s the lowest of all aircraft,” he emphasized.
Mexico ranks 12th in the construction of aircraft fuselages, turbines, and electronic components, added Marcelo Ebrard, so it’s important that the country has its own aircraft, which already have orders.
“They already have orders, they already have their production line set up. The owner, Giovanni Angelucci, told me just now that they already have 18 orders, and with this certificate, they’re going to grow a lot, even as an export market, they’re going to explore the United States,” he said.
Ebrard emphasized that this demonstrates Mexico’s ability to manufacture semiconductors, create Artificial Intelligence (AI), and create vehicles, while also noting that the country experienced significant development in aviation between 1915 and 1930.
