Mercado Libre announced that it signed an agreement with the government of the State of Mexico, through the Women’s Secretariat , which aims to train Mexican women in the use of the internet and electronic commerce, promoting their entrepreneurship and stimulating generation of own income.
In the State of Mexico, actions and policies are implemented that reduce digital gender gaps; They promote economic autonomy and promote substantive equality, thereby strengthening the capabilities, skills and empowerment of Mexican women, said Mónica Chávez Durán, Secretary of Women, during the signing of this agreement.
It should be noted that, in 2023, UNESCO indicated that in Mexico 63% of women reported not using the Internet due to not having sufficient knowledge, while the National Survey on Availability and Use of Information Technologies in Homes of the same year, revealed that in the State of Mexico women, unlike men, have 3% fewer digital skills and use the Internet less frequently, which limits their opportunities to find a job.
Chávez Durán assured that the synergy between the Women’s Secretariat and Mercado Libre represents a step forward for Mexican women to acquire knowledge and skills in digital commerce platforms and tools that help them improve the sale and distribution of the products they make, in addition supports the fight to reduce gender violence.
“From the Women’s Secretariat we work in various ways with the objective of enhancing the economic autonomy of women and contributing to the prevention and attention of violence against this sector; “Since women who do not have access to the Internet or do not know how to use it, are more vulnerable to online harassment and exploitation,” said the secretary of the branch.
At the signing of the agreement, held in Ciudad Mujeres in San Mateo Atenco, Alehira Orozco, director of Government Relations at Mercado Libre México, pointed out that more than 400 thousand Mexican families find their main source of income in the activity they carry out on the platform. of Mercado Libre.
“For us it is an honor to work with governments, as in this particular case with the State of Mexico. We are excited to be another channel for Mexican women to grow their businesses, have an extra income and achieve that economic independence that is so important,” added Alehira Orozco.
Gabriela Lorenzana González, artisan and shoe producer, originally from San Mateo Atenco, and who is a beneficiary of Ciudad Mujeres, thanked the government of the State of Mexico for its relationship with Mercado Libre, since this alliance will provide greater tools to undertake, consolidate and strengthen their businesses ; to acquire technological knowledge, to innovate and reach a greater number of clients, not only national, but also international.
Finally, the Women’s Secretary indicated that more alliances will be strengthened with companies committed to mainstreaming the gender perspective, seeking substantive equality for the benefit of women, girls and adolescents in the State of Mexico.
