Meat, beer, avocados, blueberries, a dinosaur (exhibitions), motorized vehicles, helicopters, wind propellers, yachts, among other goods, can be transported through containers and other types of equipment, options offered by the movement of products through intermodal transport.
Jonatan Zaldívar, leader of the Educational Committee of the Mexican Association of Intermodal Transport (AMTI), said that knowing the equipment through which the goods will be moved is as relevant as the nature of the merchandise itself, in addition to minimizing losses and lowering costs.
“This allows us to visualize which is the correct equipment to withstand the weight. The 20-foot containers are designed to withstand more than the 40-foot containers, which are for dimension, and there are oversized goods that exceed the container’s own characteristics. If it’s a perishable product, which some do not require refrigeration, we can move it in a general cargo container, but if it requires temperature maintenance control, it will be a specialized equipment,” he commented.
During his participation in the Container Week organized by the AMTI, which will take place from April 24th to 26th at Ferrovalle facilities, he affirmed that knowing the type of necessary transportation avoids risks such as damage to the merchandise, increased costs, or even causing accidents.
He mentioned that in maritime transport there are refrigerated containers of 20 feet or 40 feet, these are used to maintain the temperature of the cargo since the merchandise must be pre-cooled before consolidating it, in addition to preventing condensation, covering empty spaces on the floor, among other actions. This allows maintaining the cold chain and avoiding any type of incidents.
“They allow long journeys, better conditions for perishables, and the freshness of the fruit. In avocados, it allows up to 35 days of transit, bananas up to 45 days, blueberries and mangoes up to 48 days, and for other goods, it will depend on their requirements,” he indicated.
For project cargo (oversized), there are transports such as roro carriers, multipurpose shipping lines, and container ships to move these products.
He mentioned that hazardous goods such as corrosive products, batteries, chlorine, among others, can also be transported; however, this cargo will always be identified through labels on the containers.
