The Mexican Institute of Transportation (IMT) deemed it necessary to strengthen and promote freight transportation , especially intermodal transportation, and passenger transportation via rail, as this will improve the quality of life for the population and the development of Mexico.
According to the document ” Territorial Socioeconomic Impact of the Most Important Railway Works of the 2019–2024 Six-Year Term,” it was specified that this mode of transportation is safer, cheaper, and less polluting.
“It’s important to plan to double the amount of freight transported by rail over distances greater than 400 kilometers. This will be achieved under a system that allows for the shared use of rail lines and the optimization of routes and costs, thus generating better conditions for customers.”
“We must continue developing freight rail to boost development and take advantage of Mexico’s strategic position to attract and drive investment; promote cooperation for railway development, updating concessionaires’ investment commitments, focusing on infrastructure improvements and expansion; and promote improvements and the construction of railroad crossings where needed,” the document stated.
From this perspective, the IMT indicated that it is necessary to improve railway sector regulations to facilitate the completion and construction of bypasses that will optimize average operating speeds and facilitate the movement of additional cargo resulting from the influx of investment, as well as consolidate the Interoceanic Corridor and the Mayan Train.
“Create a strategy and establish the goal of identifying opportunities to transfer freight from trucks to rail based on consultations with the productive sectors and, in particular, identify the challenges and opportunities to consolidate intermodal transportation as a sustainable and competitive long-term option in the country,” he stated.
Therefore, the organization asserted that the federal government’s contribution at all levels is essential to secure greater financial support and investment in transportation infrastructure, continue expanding the national rail network (cargo and passenger), and thus be able to carry out these types of projects that benefit society as a whole.
The goal, the IMT stated, is to improve the quality of life, since greater infrastructure will lead to greater development , employment, economic growth, and investment.
He emphasized that the 2019-2024 six-year term in the railway sector opened up new opportunities for benefits, communication, and development in the economy, social welfare, transportation, communications, infrastructure, ecology, tourism, among other factors.
“The implementation of the railway generates improvements in the region’s transportation infrastructure, which is reflected in reduced costs and travel times for people, tourists, and goods, as well as improved services in the region,” he emphasized.
