The Interpacific rail route has become one of the most competitive in the sector, offering not only savings of 5% to 15% in freight transport , but also increased safety. Furthermore, it registers annual growth of 20%, which is why the Mexican Intermodal Transport Association (AMTI) is seeking to make train operations dedicated to this service more efficient.
“We’re exploring making trains more direct, so they don’t have to stop at all the terminals. Currently, the train departs from Mexico City, from Ferrovalle , and stops for more containers in Guadalajara, then stops in Culiacán and Ciudad Obregón. What we’re achieving through increased volume is that they’ll no longer stop at these ramps and go directly, which would significantly reduce transit time,” says Diego Anchustegui, president of AMTI.
In addition, he specifies that they are exploring with Baja Ferries certain plans on the Mazatlán route , starting in Topolobampo and crossing to Los Cabos and La Paz, and also loading more merchandise on the Monterrey-Guadalajara, “so we are already connecting Monterrey so that it goes up to the Interpacific, then you can do a Monterrey-Mexicali, Monterrey-Tijuana or Monterrey-Culiacán, it could become very competitive, they are also extremely high mileages and a lot of growth will come from there and also connecting the Guadalajara-Mexico, it is not many kilometers but we are at the limit for it to be a competitive service.”
Deacero Logistics (DAL) , through its intermodal division, carried out the first movements of various client and own products through the Interpacific from Ferrovalle and Guadalajara, additionally also going to Chihuahua and Monterrey.
“It’s been a challenge in the industry because there are many companies in the market that have very good or low expectations, but as DAL, we want to be committed and provide the service. Since the project began, obviously with a low volume, we’ve acquired clients who told us ‘we don’t trust them,’ but they take a trip, and with that trip, we show them that we can be trusted. It’s been a boom because it’s not just about the container, but about the entire service we can provide,” said Jacobo Cerro, head of the company’s Intermodal area.
