The massive importation of new automobiles by maritime means that Mexico has experienced has seen a pronounced slowdown in the Gulf of Mexico.
The ports along this coastline totaled 84,120 imported units in the first four months of this year, a decrease of 23.7% compared to the same period last year, according to statistics from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM).
The port of Veracruz, the most important in the Gulf of Mexico in this activity, handled 81,078 units or 20.9% less, according to the comparison periods.
Meanwhile, Altamira port has only operated three thousand and forty-two units in imports (-49.9%).
On the Pacific side, a different story is told. On that coastline, 192,817 units were handled in imports during the January-April period of this year, representing a year-on-year increase of 13.4 percent.
Here, only the port of Lázaro Cárdenas is the exception, as it has experienced a 7% decrease in the review period, with 132,221 new imported units.
Mazatlán, on the other hand, totaled 59,557 imported units or 119% more; while Manzanillo, with just one thousand and thirty-nine imported automobiles, has shown a growth of 82.6 percent.
In total, from January to April of this year, all ports in the country have totaled 276,937 units in import service, barely 1.2% less than in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, in export services, the country’s ports have taken the fast lane. In the first four months of this year, 458,521 units have been sent abroad, 21.2% more than in the same period last year.
Combining import and export maneuvers, Mexican ports have totaled 735,458 new units between January and April 2024, representing an advancement of 11.7% over the same cycle in 2023.
