In Mexico, the decarbonization of vehicle fleets is driven by the companies themselves and not through public policies , which would lead to a more accelerated transition, sector participants agreed.
Rodolfo Álvarez, Global Manager of Technical Studies for Bimbo ‘s Global Logistics Department , said that having more sustainable units is a relatively new topic in the country, where each of the participants contributes to move forward.
“In the case of Grupo Bimbo, it is an issue that began 30 years ago with a few cars, and the project gained momentum in 2014. Today we have some experience and the fact is that we cannot and should not depend on authorities, policies, regulations or technology to solve the problem for us. We have to contribute what is in our hands so that together we can move forward,” he mentioned during the panel Innovation and solutions for the management and leasing of corporate fleets, within Latam Mobility & Net Zero Mexico 2024.
Mauricio Medina, CEO of TIP Mexico , said that efforts to have more sustainable fleets have been made mainly by the private sector and not by government policies that could encourage a more accelerated transition to these new technologies.
Although he said that the good news was the announcement by the current federal government to promote electric vehicles.
“If public policies do not allow for this rapid transition, the private industry will continue to do so, but it will be slower,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Fernanda Enríquez, Marketing Manager at Samsara , said that public policies are an integral part of achieving decarbonization.
“It is a comprehensive solution that ranges from government support, infrastructure, technology that provides visibility to the problem and, from there, accompanied by a solution,” he said.
In this regard, he explained that technology has allowed them to transform data that helps fleets identify issues such as safety, as well as implement solutions to improve the efficiency and sustainability of companies.
In addition, through technology they allow their clients to monitor their fleets and achieve tangible savings.
Rodolfo Álvarez commented that technology is currently a tool for fleet management , as well as for having information that helps correct certain issues that allow them to be more efficient.
In this regard, Jaime Bringas García, project fleet manager at Citibanamex, mentioned that they have a portfolio to offer financing to companies seeking to implement sustainability.
