As part of a strategic alliance signed in September 2024 , General Motors (GM) and Hyundai Motor Company announced the joint development of five new vehicles , thus consolidating an unprecedented collaboration between two of the most influential manufacturers in the global automotive industry.
The agreement represents an effort to share platforms, reduce costs, and accelerate innovation , especially in emerging markets and the commercial electric vehicle segment.
The first fruits of this collaboration will include four models for Central and South America: a compact SUV, a compact sedan, and two pickups, in addition to an electric commercial van designed for the North American market, with launches scheduled to begin in 2028.
Although the vehicles will share common architectures, each will have a distinct interior and exterior design, preserving the identity of each brand. GM will lead the development of the midsize pickup, while Hyundai will be in charge of the compact vehicles and the electric van.
“Through this alliance, GM and Hyundai will offer customers more choices, faster and at a lower cost,” said Shilpan Amin, GM senior vice president.
Both firms estimate that, once full production is reached , sales of these vehicles could exceed 800,000 units per year .
In addition to joint developments, the alliance includes collaborative initiatives in material procurement, transportation and logistics , as well as the exploration of partnerships to use low-carbon steel, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to sustainability .
GM and Hyundai are also exploring other potential areas of cooperation, including propulsion technologies such as internal combustion engines, hybrids, battery electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cells, which could extend the global reach of their collaboration.
“This strategic collaboration with GM will allow us to continue offering value and choice to our customers across diverse segments and markets,” said José Muñoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.
