The American automaker Ford this week launched the pilot project to ship cars from the port of Guaymas, in the state of Sonora (northern Mexico), with a final destination to Chile, with which it aims to reduce its logistics costs by up to 30 per cent.
The vessel will also touch the port of Lázaro Cárdenas , the main maritime-automotive hub on the Mexican Pacific coast.
According to state authorities, 1,400 vehicles are projected to be shipped this year and 14,000 in 2025.
The reduction of up to 30% in Ford’s logistics cost is due to the fact that the automaker previously sent its units to the port of Lázaro Cárdenas from its plant in Hermosillo, Sonora, on a route of almost two thousand kilometers.
With this first shipment, the relaunch of the Sonoran port is established, which began a modernization plan in 2022.
“With the shipment of this first shipment with vehicles from the Ford plant manufactured in Hermosillo, we are launching a Pilot Plan, which I am sure will mark a before and after in the local economy and in general the economy of the entire entity,” he said. said Alfonso Durazo Montaño, governor of Sonora, at the formal start of Ford’s activities.
The local leader has told the media that work is being carried out to deepen the port’s waters in order to allow Guaymas to receive heavier ships with greater loads. In addition to the construction of a parking platform at the port to allow the departure of cargo on a larger scale.
Regarding the port, it will also benefit from the project of a 1 gigawatt solar energy park that will power the port area. This project will seek to take advantage of the state’s lithium resources, which are speculated to be the largest in Mexico.
