Ferromex leads in freight movement from January to April

During this period, 104.78 million tons of essential goods were transported by rail.

Ferromex toma la delantera en el movimiento de carga de enero a abril

During the January-April 2024 period, Ferromex transported 22.46 million tons, making it the fastest-growing railway company during this time.

According to data from the “Pulso del Sistema Ferroviario Mexicano” report by the Regulatory Agency for Rail Transport (ARTF), the company belonging to Grupo México Transportes (GMXT) grew by 6.7% year-over-year during this period.

Meanwhile, Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) of Mexico moved 17.51 million tons compared to 16.87 million tons in 2023, representing a 3.8% increase.

Additionally, Ferrocarril y Terminal del Valle de México (Ferrovalle) showed a growth of 3.1%, transporting 0.75 million tons compared to 0.72 million tons.

Together with the Administradora de la Vía Corta Tijuana-Tecate (ADMI), Ferrosur, and the Línea Coahuila Durango (LCD), a total of 46.19 million tons were transported compared to 44.21 million tons, resulting in a 4.4% growth in freight transportation during the first four months of the year.

Compared to the January-April 2023 period, domestic traffic grew by 15.3%, international traffic grew by 0.3%, imports increased by 1.1%, and exports decreased by 2.3%.

Of the total tons, 21.7 million tons were industrial products, 13.20 million tons were agricultural products, 5.97 million tons were petroleum and its derivatives, 3 million tons were mineral products, and the remaining amount consisted of forest products, inorganic products, and animal derivatives, which together accounted for 2.21 million tons.

Compared to the January-April 2023 period, the product groups that saw the largest increases were: petroleum and its derivatives (8.83%), agricultural (7.44%), and industrial (4.97%). The product groups that saw the largest decreases were: minerals (9.12%) and inorganic products (8.25%).

The ARTF mentioned that during the mentioned period, 104.78 million tons of basic goods were transported, with corn accounting for 70.66 million tons (representing 67.44%) and chickpeas, peas, soybeans, and peanuts accounting for 25.58 million tons (24.42%), together representing 91.8%.
