Between 2018 and 2024 in Mexico, the different brands that participate in the market have displaced 651 heavy vehicles, of which 616 correspond to passenger units (94.6% of the total), while for the cargo segment 35 have been placed (5.4% of the total) , according to the Administrative Registry of the Heavy Vehicle Automotive Industry (RAIAVP) of the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (Inegi).
In Mexico, it is estimated that 27% of the generation of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) corresponds to the transportation segment, which is why the electrification of the vehicle fleet is an option that the industry envisions to reduce this impact.
During the presentation of identification plates for electric vehicles, Nohémi Muñóz, head of the General Directorate of Federal Auto Transport (DGAF) described that this measure seeks to promote electrification in auto transport, “this is the result of the effort of chambers and associations to encourage the transition to new technologies.”
Based on data from the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) , the average age in the cargo segment as of last May was 20 years , while in the passenger segment it was 15.7 years.
Due to this situation, the push for electrification must go hand in hand with working on the renewal of the vehicle fleet, “more modern units will allow us to reduce fossil and GHG emissions that generate more pollution,” said Leonardo Gómez, executive president of the National Association of Private Transport (ANTP) .
In his view, the route that electrification should follow is to start with private units, distribution vehicles and finally long-distance vehicles.
One point that Gómez highlighted is the focus that must be taken on the charging network to guarantee the optimal work of the fleets that are electrified, an element that Miguel Ángel Martínez, president of the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) , agreed with , who added that having the appropriate infrastructure will motivate greater adoption of this type of technology.
For Miguel Ángel Martínez, the electrification of transport will be key for Mexico to comply with what was signed in the Paris Agreement , on the reduction of GHG, which among other factors considers reducing the global temperature from 2.0° to 1.5°.
Lorena Martínez, general manager of BY Deléctrica , also emphasized the need to have a solid charging network, which allows users of this type of vehicle to improve confidence and thereby reduce the barrier to entry in these technologies.
“Reducing the carbon footprint is not a goal, it is an obligation,” said Elim Luviano, executive director of the National Chamber of Passenger and Tourism Transport (Canapat) , adding that having the plates will allow the transportation sector to stay at the forefront and transform the industry through innovation.
Lorena Martínez added that electric trucks prevent the emission of 228 tons of CO2 per year, in addition to having efficiency benefits during their operation, based on better performance in terms of torque and power.
The electric vehicle plates that were released by SICT are:
- Electric charge
- Electric passage
- Electric tourism
- Electric parcel and courier services
- Electric Lease
- Particular electric load
- International electric transport
- Electric towing cranes
- Electrical towing and salvage
- Electric industrial cranes
