This weekend, thousands of taxpayers in Mexico, including various actors involved in foreign trade, reported problems with their electronic signatures , which appeared as “revoked” in the Tax Administration Service (SAT) system , a situation that has generated obstacles for the validation of customs declarations and other essential procedures in the import and export of goods.
The Confederation of Associations of Customs Agents of the Mexican Republic (CAAAREM) confirmed through a statement that this computer error intensified on Sunday, October 27.
“Initially, the SAT indicated that the e-signatures were revoked due to irregularities in the tax situation. And they requested that, in order to resolve the issue, the affected party make an appointment and go to the decentralized office to correct the situation. Therefore, CAAAREM, confirming that it was a widespread error, sent both the SAT and ANAM information, evidence of the validation files and even legal grounds as to why the e-signatures were not revoked or had lost validity, and that on the contrary, it was an error in the SAT database,” explained the CAAAREM statement.
Given the concerns of those affected, at midday on Monday the SAT confirmed that electronic signatures directly related to foreign trade are functioning normally, and that the complete restoration of the rest of the affected signatures is expected during this day .
He also indicated that affected taxpayers will not have to carry out any additional procedures to recover the validity of their electronic signatures.
This is not a new situation. The failure in e-signatures is one of the most common failures in customs systems reported this year.
In February, the Mexican National Customs Agency (ANAM) system experienced failures at key customs offices such as Nuevo Laredo and Manzanillo, affecting the flow of goods for several days.
On that occasion, ANAM implemented a contingency phase to operate in an alternative manner, although this measure did not prevent losses for foreign trade.
So far, although official information from the SAT indicates that the situation is being addressed, neither the SAT nor the ANAM has given more details about the exact causes of the error in the e-signatures , this generates concern in the foreign trade community, which demands greater stability in digital systems to avoid interruptions and improve the country’s competitiveness in the international market.
