QUERÉTARO, QRO.- This Monday the activities of the eighth National Congress on Road Safety organized by the National Association of Private Transportation (ANTP) began. Alex Theissen Long, president of the association’s board of directors, highlighted that since the birth of the ANTP, road safety has been a guiding axis.
He highlighted that although Mexico is far from meeting the goals of reducing road accidents and reducing fatalities resulting from them, there are exercises such as the congress that contribute to solving the problem.
He assured that, although road accidents are an intrinsic issue in the mobility of people, goods and merchandise, it is urgent to meet the goals of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 .
“Safety is the responsibility of everyone, of companies, authorities, pedestrians, motorcyclists and motorists,” he stated.
Theissen Long added that the congress and the lessons learned from it will help prevent accidents and save lives.
Alberto Mendoza, representative of the Mexican Institute of Transportation (IMT) , stressed that among the goals of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 is the standardization of standards, laws and programs, with subsequent monitoring of progress.
Another important goal is to improve communication routes and ensure that vehicles comply with the relevant safety certifications. As well as stimulating safe driving skills, avoiding the use of narcotics and alcohol consumption.
“Another essential point is the reduction of the time interval between a traffic accident and the provision of emergency services. The first hour after the accident is crucial because lives can be saved. It should be noted that the figures reveal that in Mexico between 15 and 16 thousand people lose their lives due to road accidents,” Mendoza said.
In this sense, he recalled the publication of the General Law of Mobility and Road Safety (LGMSV) and the importance of its harmonization throughout the country, “because this lays the foundations to solve the problem.”
For his part, Álvaro Flores, general director of Highway Safety and Facilities of the National Guard , explained that motor transportation is closely linked to road safety .
He also recognized the actions on the matter that associations, chambers and companies linked to motor transportation have implemented.
At the same time, he highlighted the commitment of motor transport companies to safety, leveraged with a good selection of personnel, as well as training programs for operators and the incorporation of new technologies in vehicles. All with the objective of “reducing incidents and guaranteeing road safety ,” Flores commented.
