Contecon Manzanillo , operator of the Specialized Container Terminal (TEC) II in the port of Manzanillo, celebrates its 11th anniversary in Mexico in the midst of an expansion project, which will allow it to face the expected growth in demand for port services for cargo containerized in the country, mainly on the Pacific coast.
The expansion project of the TEC II, the second largest in the Colima port, is estimated at an expense of 300 million dollars and includes the construction of more than 400 meters of additional dock , yards to store more than 800 thousand TEUs (containers 20 feet), 900 plugs for reefers (temperature controlled containers), the acquisition of two super post panamax dock cranes and another six RTGs.
With the adaptations, the terminal will have a capacity to operate just over two million TEUs , from the current 1.2 million; Likewise, it would have a total of 10 super post Panamax cranes and up to 13 RTG cranes.
“We are excited about our expansion project, which will strengthen our operations and contribute to the economic growth of the state (of Colima). By the end of 2025 we will have invested $300 million in expanding our facilities. Years of experience in the port industry in Mexico, together with the commitment of our team, have made this important achievement possible, which improves our operational capacity and reinforces our role in regional and national economic development,” said José Antonio Contreras, CEO of Contecon Manzanillo, cited in a press release.
During the first six months of this year, Contecon Manzanillo has operated 698,226 TEU , which has meant a growth of 20.1% compared to the same period last year, according to data from the port authority.
This growth has been two-way. In imports it totals 319 thousand 183 TEU (+27.8%) , in export it accumulates 285 thousand 153 TEU (+31.5%) and transshipment 93 thousand 890 TEU (-18.2%).
“Contecon Manzanillo is positioned as a fundamental pillar in foreign trade and a benchmark in the port sector. Strategic investments, along with a strong commitment to social and environmental responsibility, reinforce our mission to drive economic growth and community well-being. We are proud of our achievements and we look to the future with optimism and determination, being part of the engine of development and progress,” said Contreras.
With growth, the commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) has also increased ; it is the first company in the port of Manzanillo to obtain Carbon Neutral certification.
The anniversary of Contecon Manzanillo occurs at a time when the port of Manzanillo experienced a road collapse last week in its vicinity , causing the entire port system to be interrupted and causing logistical disruptions to a wide range of productive sectors.
Contecon Manzanillo is a subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) , a Philippine company founded in 1987. ICTSI has an extensive global presence , operating 34 terminals in 20 countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.
