The operation in the port of Manzanillo, in Mexico, continues to show increases. At the end of the first half of 2024, the four terminals that handle containers have added a total of one million 935 thousand 710 20-foot containers (TEU) , an international measure in terms of maritime statistics.
This figure is 11.5% higher than that recorded in the same period last year, according to data from the Administration of the National Port System (Asipona) Manzanillo .
Likewise, these containers operated in the period are divided into 825 thousand 632 TEU of import (+13.9%) , 808 thousand 778 TEU of export (+20.2%) and 301 thousand 300 of transshipment (-10.8%).
The Association of Manzanillo Terminals and Operators (ASTOM) has highlighted in a statement distributed to the press that in June alone a record was recorded in the handling of TEUs in imports , with 145,186 units.
This port has positioned itself over the years as the main recipient of containerized goods on the Mexican Pacific coast, coming mainly from the Far East.
Measured by volume, containerized cargo has registered a total of 11 million 814 thousand 282 tons in the January-June period of this year, 8.1% more than the same cycle in 2023; In addition, it represented 68.8% of the total cargo handled by the port of Manzanillo in the first half, including general cargo, agricultural bulk, mineral bulk and petroleum products.
Asipona Manzanillo itself highlighted in its statistical report that during the first half of the year, the months of March and May have set records in the handling of TEUs , with 340,409 and 333,727, respectively.
Greater container handling has also motivated a growing number of truck entries to the port, with this first semester being the highest on record, with 582,894.
Meanwhile, the story is different regarding the arrival of vessels, since during the January-June period of this year 899 vessels were received , 70 less than in the same period of 2023, a situation that is explained by the use of vessels of greater capacity by the shipping lines (160 vessels of more than 360 meters in length were received in the period alone).
Given this increased activity in the port, the Manzanillo customs made changes to the opening hours from Monday to Friday , to be from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. for import services, and remains open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. week for export activities.
This measure aims to avoid saturation in the terminals , such as those seen in recent years.
