MAJALCA, CHIH.- Fatigue sets in during a night’s journey. After hours behind the wheel and with the cargo still far from its destination, stopping to rest would seem logical, but for truck drivers, finding a safe place to do so remains one of the challenges on the country’s highways.

The problem combines two risks that coexist during the journey : fatigue accumulated from long hours of operation and the insecurity that can arise when stopping. Finding a place to pause also involves considering the driver’s safety, the security of the truck and the cargo, making rest a necessity that is not always easy to fulfill.

This is the reality that drivers constantly express, hence the need to create safe spaces for them. The private sector achieved this; on this occasion, it was OXXO Gas , which, in coordination with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT),  inaugurated the first OXXO Gas Safe Stop, a Travel Center with Comprehensive Services, in Majalca, Chihuahua, which had been announced in recent days by the federal government.

The space aims to concentrate in one place conditions for the safekeeping of units and goods, as well as services that allow operators to stop and rest before continuing their journey .

The need is not lost on those behind the wheel. During the inauguration, one of the operators recounted that he cannot stop just anywhere on his routes for safety reasons and recalled that he has even been the victim of assault and the theft of a truck.

“This project was designed to benefit the carrier, understanding the needs and challenges they face on the road,” explained Carlos Aguirre Quiroga, B2B director of OXXO Gas, in an interview with T21.

The executive pointed out that the objective goes beyond fuel supply, aiming to provide operators with the necessary services to rest and continue their journey in one place.

The complex required an investment of over 100 million pesos (MXN) , occupies more than 35,000 square meters (m²) , and is expected to benefit around 480,000 users annually . Aguirre explained that approximately 13,000 vehicles , including heavy trucks and light vehicles, pass through this area daily.

The rest stop has capacity for 37 units, including full configurations , in addition to six or seven temporary spaces for stays of between 30 minutes and one hour, intended for those who only need to use some service before continuing their journey.

This site offers rest areas, restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, food options, fuel, and mechanical assistance. During the tour of the facilities, it was reported that there are 10 showers, eight for men and two for women .

Resting is also part of road safety

Beyond the protection of the units and goods, the opening of the complex brought to the table another component of road safety: the conditions available for operators to comply with their rest periods.

“Rest is also part of road safety,” said Alex Theissen, president of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Private Transportation (ANTP) .

Theissen explained that a safe road depends not only on the conditions of the infrastructure, signage or vehicles, but also on having places that allow operators to stop, rest and then continue their journey in suitable conditions.

In that regard, Tania Carro Toledo, Undersecretary of Communications and Transportation of the SICT, recalled that NOM-087 establishes maximum driving times and mandatory rest periods for operators.

The official stated that compliance with these periods helps reduce the risk of accidents associated with fatigue and protects both operators and other road users.

But rest isn’t just about having a place to stop. The safety of the driver, the vehicle, and the cargo are the other components the rest stop aims to address.

In that regard, Carlos Aguirre also explained that the complex has access control, cameras, and private security. Furthermore, a barracks for the National Guard was built , with the intention of ensuring a permanent presence of its personnel on the premises.

These measures are complemented by private security patrols and video surveillance, while the parking facility allows cargo units to remain within the complex during rest periods.

The location also takes into account the area’s logistical flow . The project is situated near Federal Route 45, which connects Chihuahua with Ciudad Juárez, identified by the SICT as one of the main corridors for the movement of people and goods to the northern border, Aguirre explained.

More inns in the sights

The opening in Majalca is part of the actions announced days ago by the federal government to strengthen highway safety, including the implementation of the C4 Highway Command Center and the development of a network of 15 safe rest stops. The OXXO Gas complex is the first of these locations to become operational.

Carro Toledo explained that, after this first opening, the SICT has authorization to continue with the development of the executive project for nine other rest stops , while five additional ones are in the process of review, to complete the 15 contemplated.

OXXO Gas has not yet decided where its next project will be located. Aguirre explained that the company is analyzing its network of service stations and various highways to identify locations where the concept could be replicated.

“We are conducting analyses to understand what the next rest stops we could build might be,” he said.

For now, he added, the priority will be to ensure that the Majalca complex meets the needs of the transporters before moving on to other locations.

For Theissen, the need goes beyond a facility.

“Mexico needs a network of safe rest stops that supports the growth of its logistics activity and at the same time recognizes the fundamental role of those who travel our roads every day,” he said.

Women’s participation in the Mexican labor market reached 46.3% in 2024 , according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) ; however, there are some sectors that are below average, such as the maintenance and support sector for heavy vehicles.

While women are estimated to have a participation of close to 21% of total jobs in the automotive industry , in the heavy vehicle maintenance and technical support segment it is only 11.5 percent.

In response to this reality, the Technicians and Engineers of the Future program was conceived as part of Scania’s Women Driving Change project , where, according to Alejandro Mondragón, president and CEO of the brand in Mexico, it is the result of the passion for this type of initiative, the support of the entire board , and being aligned with the personal values ​​of the members of the corporation.

Mondragón acknowledged that, as with any corporation, profitability is pursued, but this type of initiative changes paradigms, addresses the reality of the industry that requires skilled talent and that this need will become increasingly profound. Therefore, the objective is to raise awareness in the industry and encourage more companies to participate in these types of actions, and by filling these positions, productivity will be achieved.

Ana Laura Islas Tello, People Development & Sustainable Culture Manager of Scania Mexico, described that the initiative is part of their United Nations Global Compact strategies , and is a business strategy for Scania based on having more diversity of thought, and better products and services.

Starting point

The Technicians and Engineers of the Future program graduated the first nine women of this initiative, who are joining Scania’s maintenance and service activities for, in this case, the northern area of ​​the Valley of Mexico.

Ana Laura Islas acknowledged that the Scania Drivers program identified an area of ​​opportunity in terms of women’s representation, in order to begin building relationships with academia to promote the training of more women in STEM careers (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and in disciplines related to the transportation sector.

This effort involves joint work with the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ) in Mexico, ProSociedad  and  Grupo CEDVA with the project to reach 15 female technicians and 45 female engineers annually for the next three years .

Islas emphasized that the brand’s entire effort is focused on ensuring that the graduates remain committed to working for Scania , and if they do leave the company, an effort will be made for the benefit of the industry as a whole.

Comprehensive vision

Although the Technicians and Engineers of the Future program aims to train specialists for the automotive industry, the curriculum is comprehensive and complements their technical training.

Therefore, in addition to STEM skills, they also receive soft skills training . “This program complements their academic training, with applications such as leadership workshops, resume writing, and interview preparation. We are becoming advisors for their professional careers ,” highlighted Adriana Davy, Marketing and Communications Manager at Scania Mexico.

“Another topic we talk about a lot is sisterhood. It’s normal for classrooms to be all girls, so sometimes they’re not used to being among women, and this type of training also aims to address emotional issues,” Davy added.

Among other topics,  personal finances are addressed , along with advice on managing their resources, because there is an awareness that some of these women may be the economic support of their households.

Although only technicians graduated in this first generation , some are engineering students and the goal is for them to also participate in the other program, which lasts for a year of training instead of three weeks .

For Scania’s executives, the goal is clear: to trigger the participation of more companies and the training of more women with the skills required by the industry, which will also allow them to change their lives and those of their families.

El cargo Techniques and Engineering of the Future: Profitability and Sustainability on the Same Track apareció primero en T21.

Previously, maintaining the cold chain seemed to have a very specific mission: preserving the correct temperature from origin to destination. Today, that’s no longer enough. Fleets need to know the unit’s location, what’s happening inside the cargo box, how many times its doors have been opened, whether the equipment requires maintenance, and even if an alert justifies halting the journey.

The information is there. The challenge now is to use it .

Despite the progress of digitalization in transportation , a gap still exists in leveraging the data generated by equipment. José Carlos Gómez, commercial director of Thermo King Latin America North, estimated that between 15% and 18% of their clients currently use these tools, while one of the main obstacles continues to be resistance to change within companies.

But the decision to digitize operations is no longer solely the responsibility of the fleets. Customers themselves are raising their demands and, in some cases, are requesting temperature tracking of goods from the moment they leave the premises until they reach their destination as part of their receiving and payment processes.

In dry cargo, a delay can mean lost hours and additional costs. In temperature-controlled cargo, it can also mean putting the product at risk. A temperature fluctuation, an unexpected door opening, or a malfunction during transit can compromise goods that must travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometers before reaching the consumer.

In this sense, digitalization allows for monitoring what happens to the merchandise and is also becoming a tool for keeping the truck operational. Available systems allow for tracking location, speed, temperature, and door openings, but also for identifying maintenance needs and determining whether an alarm requires halting operations or can be addressed after the trip is completed.

For Gómez, this is part of the value of using available information to anticipate interventions and avoid unnecessary shutdowns . He also believes that technological infrastructure is no longer the main obstacle to doing so.

Fifteen years ago, he explained, leaving an urban center could mean losing connectivity. Today, he noted, Mexico has better cellular coverage, so the challenge has shifted to within the companies themselves.

An increasingly long cold chain

The challenge will grow as the way perishable products are distributed changes.

Rising temperatures, urban deliveries, and the need to bring goods closer to increasingly specific points of consumption are creating opportunities for smaller vehicles, electrification, and new temperature-controlled solutions. Gómez even predicts that these systems will begin to expand to units such as motorcycles and, eventually, drones.

Thermo King currently offers electric solutions, connected digital equipment and systems supported by solar panels, in addition to traditional diesel technologies that have incorporated improvements focused on reducing consumption.

The company, part of Trane Technologies and with over 90 years of history, focuses on temperature-controlled transportation solutions and operates through a network of distributors. In Latin America, it has over 6,000 units connected to its systems.

Thus, for refrigerated fleets, the next competitive advantage might not only be in adding more units or incorporating new equipment, but in making sure that every kilometer traveled also generates information capable of improving the next one.

El cargo Refrigerated fleets face the challenge of turning data into operational efficiency: Thermo King apareció primero en T21.

The need to train and professionalize more heavy vehicle operators keeps training as one of the main challenges for the federal trucking industry . Faced with this situation, industry organizations have added a new alternative to expand the tools available for driver preparation.

Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA) and the General Directorate of Federal Motor Transport (DGAF) signed collaboration agreements that will allow them to take advantage of the infrastructure and specialized programs of the International Center for Instruction of Airports and Auxiliary Services (CIIASA) for the training and updating of federal motor transport operators.

Representatives from the National Chamber of Freight Transportation (Canacar) , the National Chamber of Passenger and Tourism Transportation (Canapat), and the National Association of Private Transportation (ANTP) participated in the signing . These organizations announced the agreement through their social media networks and highlighted the importance of strengthening the training of human capital to advance the safety and professionalization of the sector.

For the freight trucking industry, the agreement comes as the availability of drivers continues to strain operations. Canacar has estimated the national shortage at around 96,000 drivers , a situation that has led the sector to promote schools, specialized centers, and partnerships with educational institutions to expand the training of new drivers.

Infrastructure for freight and passenger transport

With the new scheme, companies affiliated with Canapat will be able to access CIIASA’s infrastructure and specialized programs to strengthen the continuous training of passenger transport drivers.

“Strengthening the training of our drivers is strengthening passenger transport,” Canapat stated on its social media.

For its part, Canacar highlighted that ASA’s experience and CIIASA’s infrastructure will strengthen the training of operators and raise the level of talent required by the freight transport industry.

The ANTP stated that the agreement represents an opportunity to promote training and professionalization, placing human capital as one of the components to maintain safer and more efficient logistics and transportation operations.

The CIIASA, named “Engineer Roberto Kobeh González”, has infrastructure intended for specialized technical training and during 2026 includes in its offer activities related to certification in road transport and freight service.

The signing was attended by Tania Carro Toledo, Undersecretary of Communications and Transportation of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) ; Luis Ruiz Hernández, Director General of Federal Motor Transport; and Carlos Manuel Merino Campos, Director General of ASA, as well as representatives of business organizations in the sector.

The agreement thus expands the training options available for the road transport sector , at a time when attracting new operators is not the only challenge: so is ensuring that those who join and those already behind the wheel have continuous training to meet the operational and safety demands of the sector.

“It will be an exhibition of vehicles, engines, components, technology and services, but it will also be a great space for innovation, decisions and of course business,” he said.

This activity will also have an impact beyond the fairgrounds. The arrival of international visitors, exhibitors, and participants will increase the demand for services related to the meetings industry in Guadalajara, where economic expectations for 2027 aim to maintain the level achieved in the previous edition.

“We are going to reach one billion pesos in economic impact for the first time in just three days,” said Gustavo Stauffer, general director of the Guadalajara Visitors and Conventions Bureau.

Based on data from ANPACT, Expo Transporte ANPACT 2025 resulted in 60,000 visitors, 500 participating brands, 70,000 square meters of exhibition space, and an economic impact of one billion pesos.

Given this expectation, the exhibition area will use the same 70,000 square meters , and it is planned to use the outdoor area of ​​Expo Guadalajara again, located across Avenida De las Rosas.

“We no longer fit inside Expo Guadalajara,” it was noted during the press conference, explaining that they are also keeping a close eye on future expansions of the venue to meet the demand for space.

The strategy is based on the results of 2025, an edition that was highlighted by the organizers as the largest held to date, both in terms of the number of visitors and international presence.

Technology is no longer just a tool for tracking a truck’s location. For Grupo MexAmerik , its integration has expanded to include trip management, security, driver evaluation, and the level of service offered to its customers .

Over the past few years, the carrier has developed a strategy in which its transportation management system (TMS) functions as the central hub for each trip and is integrated with different systems and technological solutions, in addition to incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) tools, explained Pablo Ocampo, CEO of Grupo MexAmerik.

“For many years we have been developing technology and part of what we do is use artificial intelligence now, integrating our TMS with different vertical systems,” he commented in an interview with T21.

This system centralizes information for each trip and is used to evaluate operators . It also determines awards and bonuses for operators, as well as providing information related to the level of service the company offers its customers.

The adoption of new tools has also required involving those behind the wheel. Ocampo explained that the drivers have become accustomed to the constant incorporation of technology within the company, a strategy in which they also seek to ensure that the new solutions represent a benefit for them.

El cargo Expo Transporte ANPACT 2027: Taking on the challenge of surpassing a historic edition apareció primero en T21.

ALLENDE, NL.– A head-on collision can mean more than just taking a vehicle to the repair shop. While components such as bumpers, grilles, reinforcements, or hoods are being repaired, the vehicle remains out of service, a scenario that has led carriers to seek alternatives to minimize damage and maintain the availability of their fleets.

Following that logic, Vigomex , a manufacturer of bumpers and accessories for tractor-trailers , focused the development of its bumpers or “bull bars” on protecting components of the units from impacts and reducing the damage that can take them to the workshop, explained Alejandra Villarreal, the company’s commercial representative .

“The purpose of our bull bar is to protect the investment of transporters, ensuring that their units are not stopped due to impacts that could cause them to be out of service in maintenance workshops,” he said.

Currently, the company has more than 40 designs ready for sale and registered with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) .

The cost after the impact

For a fleet, the economic consequences of an incident can increase as the number of vehicles exposed to road operations grows. Villarreal explained that the company has received evidence from clients regarding damages sustained after certain impacts.

According to the Vigomex representative, in some of these cases the repair cost was reduced to around 30% of what it would have cost to replace components such as plastic bumpers, reinforcements, grille and hood.

The effect takes on another dimension when it comes to companies with fleets of 100, 200 or even more units, where the costs derived from repairs and vehicles stopped can multiply.

Villarreal noted that some customers have incorporated this type of protection from the moment they place their order for their vehicles and request that the units come equipped from the distributor.

The development of new designs stems from the needs of the carriers and distributors themselves. Vigomex works with units provided by clients or agencies to obtain the molds and templates necessary for each model.

Once the vehicle is at the plant, the company requires between three and four days to develop the first design , on which modifications can be made according to the requirements of the client or distributor.

Collaboration with the agencies also allows some units to be delivered with the bumper already installed, preventing the carrier from having to subsequently take the vehicle to another adaptation process.

In addition, Villarreal indicated that the company maintains an after-sales service to handle repairs or warranties when any impact is registered.

From Allende, Nuevo León, Vigomex has expanded the reach of its products beyond the northeast of the country. Villarreal stated that the company currently works with 10 of the largest transportation lines in Mexico , while continuing to develop designs as new models and fleet requirements emerge.

In an industry where growth involves much more than simply adding operations, business development has become a key element in strengthening the competitiveness of logistics companies. Mauricio Jiménez Domínguez , Business Development Manager at Tempo Transportes , has built his career in this area, focusing his experience on connecting market needs with new business opportunities.

With more than eight years of experience in logistics, transportation and foreign trade, he has promoted initiatives related to commercial expansion, the strengthening of strategic alliances and the professionalization of processes within the company.

Upon joining an industry marked by competition and the constant evolution of supply chains , his vision has been linked to understanding where the market is moving and how a transport company can respond to those needs.

In his role at Tempo Transportes in business development, he has participated in procedures that contributed to strengthening the company’s position in the national logistics industry.

His involvement extends beyond direct customer relations. He has fostered the company’s connections with associations, organizations, and specialized logistics and foreign trade spaces.

In a sector where companies require greater adaptability to changes in trade flows, the evolution of transport and the new dynamics of foreign trade, Mauricio Jiménez, who is part of the T21 2026 21 Young Leaders , advocates for a vision in which growth must be accompanied by professionalization.

His academic background strengthens his career path. Mauricio holds a degree in International Business and a specialization in Logistics and Supply Chains, both from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara (UAG). He is currently pursuing an MBA at UAG, in collaboration with Arizona State University, seeking to expand his skills in business management and leadership.

Mauricio Jiménez is part of a generation of professionals who understand logistics from a comprehensive perspective : as an operational activity, but also as a space to generate business, build alliances and strengthen the competitiveness of companies.

In the “Safest Operator” category, Carlos Lazo, Samsara’s regional sales director, commented that this space recognizes the work done with operators .

One of the finalists in the category was Grupo Vencedor , which has a 70-year track record in personnel and tourism transportation. Among the results obtained were a 30% reduction in high-risk events , a 25% decrease in incidents attributable to the operator, and a 20% increase in response times.

GCC was also a finalist in this category, with findings such as a 60% decrease in insurance premium expenses, a 40% reduction in total accidents, and 74% less time spent speeding .

The winner of this category was Grupo Aralo (member of the  Top 100 of Autotransport® ), which achieved a 30% reduction in risky driving, 25% fewer incidents with operator responsibility, and a 20% increase in incident response .

The “Excellence in asset security” category distinguishes companies that have successfully developed innovative strategies in this field.

The first finalist in the category was Grupo Express del Norte (member of the  Top 100 of Autotransport® ), which achieved, among other things, savings of more than 100 million pesos (mdp) due to accident issues, zero completed robberies in the 2024 and 2025 cycle, as well as 100% recovery of assets .

Another finalist was Trayecto (number 1 in the Top 100 of Autotransporte® ), which achieved a 38% decrease in total thefts, a 92% recovery of assets and 100% savings in insurance policy costs .

The winner of this category was Grupo MexAmerik (member of the Top 100 of Autotransporte® ), which achieved a 45% reduction in completed robberies, increased thwarted robberies by 125%, resulting in 54% fewer robbery claims, despite having an operation of high-value products and use of critical routes .

In the “Digital Transformation of the Year” category, Óscar Gutiérrez highlighted the celebration of advanced technological integration, with Nissan Mexicana being one of the finalists , with results such as increasing overall operational efficiency from 10 to 25%, as well as 100% automation in critical flows via API.

García’s Trucking (a member of the Top 100 of Autotransport® ) was another finalist, which reduced the accident rate by 78%, also obtaining 17 million pesos in fuel savings due to efficiency, and a reduction of 12 million pesos in costs related to accidents.

The winner in this category was Royal Transports , which, among other factors, reduced completed thefts by 57% and theft losses by 59%, as well as automating theft reports via Slack by 80% .

Carlos Lazo emphasized that while all these awards recognize excellence, achieving these standards depends on the human factor, and for this reason, Rigoberto Carrera of Flecha Amarilla was recognized with the “Operator of the Year” award, who achieved, among other factors, a journey of 129 million kilometers in 2025 without accidents, a total of 100% in safety score, and zero disciplinary sanctions in his career.
