“Customers are usually the ones who seek out or want to ensure they have some of these devices or security features in their vehicles. However, I think the missing piece in the industry now is the full utilization of all the data and all the technology,” he commented.

In an interview with T21, Alpízar explained that the brand’s strategy is focused on strengthening its connectivity and security ecosystem, as well as using technology to contribute to the efficiency of its customers’ operations.

Itzel Alpízar, Business Intelligence & Connectivity Strategy Manager at Daimler Truck México.

Among the available tools, he mentioned Detroit Assurance and Freightliner Link 3.0 , which work together to generate safety protocols with a preventative approach. Through artificial intelligence (AI), it is possible to process different stimuli from both the environment and the vehicle itself to detect alerts that require action.

The goal, he explained, is to act before an accident occurs or, when an incident has already happened, to activate protocols that help protect the vehicle, the cargo, and the driver. In terms of road safety, the tools also aim to anticipate risk factors such as fatigue.

Training, a gap to close

However, technology requires the participation of those behind the wheel. Alpízar identified the training and awareness of drivers as one of the main gaps in taking advantage of available solutions.

He explained that the company works with its clients on training to facilitate familiarization with these technologies, as there are still cases in which operators obstruct the cameras or show resistance to using them.

“When we show them these videos or best practices with other clients that have helped us prevent accidents or prevent theft, their thinking and adoption change quite a bit,” he said.

The second challenge lies in the data . The platforms generate large volumes of information that need to be translated into decisions and preventative actions.

As an example, he pointed out that if a road is identified where, on a certain incline, vehicles tend to exceed their speed excessively, parameters and other actions can be established to help prevent risks. Customizing platforms, devices, and alerts also allows solutions to be tailored to each client’s needs.

The relationship between carriers and these tools has also changed. According to Alpízar, initially it was the responsibility of the supplier companies to approach clients and demonstrate the need to incorporate technology; now, it is the carriers themselves who seek out security devices and solutions.

However, he considered that the next step for the industry will be to take full advantage of the information generated by these technologies , so that the data can be translated into specific measures for each operation.

More tracking capabilities

Looking ahead to the evolution of these solutions, the company is working on incorporating additional tracking sensors , with the intention of facilitating the monitoring of different components of the operation, even when there are changes in boxes or goods.

It also seeks to strengthen tools focused on operator performance. Alpízar explained that they already have Driver Coach , which provides operators with suggestions to improve their performance, while they work on strengthening a scoring system that allows clients to identify best practices and replicate them among their other operators.

Given what he described as a challenging macroeconomic environment, the strategy will be to stay close to customers and complement the units with solutions that allow them to make better use of their assets.

“What we are looking for is to be very close to our customers and be able to offer them these kinds of differentiators that help them to take full advantage not only of the unit, but also of the range of solutions we have to support them in this situation,” he pointed out.

Aaron Sanchez, manager of the Altiplano and Western Region of Scania Mexico, explained that San Luis Potosi was chosen as the first point because of its location and connectivity, but the operational objective is what happens before delivering a vehicle again.

“What we are looking for is for this workshop to function in order to guarantee that the purchase of used vehicles […] results in a unit without faults, a unit that is ready for the road,” he said.

And to get back on the road, the units go through a checklist of up to 100 points , divided into five categories that cover safety and operational control, powertrain, diagnostics, chassis, suspension, structure and cab conditions.

The inspection can extend to the vehicle’s inner workings. If necessary, technicians can remove and repair an engine , as well as work on the transmission and differentials before the vehicle is put back on sale.

The return to San Luis Potosí also has a historical component for the company. Gisela Quintero, Director of Customer Experience and Services at Scania Mexico, recalled that it was precisely there where the company began its journey in the country.

But the opening also comes at a time when investment decisions face a less straightforward scenario.

Manuel Aranda, Retail Director of Scania Mexico, acknowledged that the country is experiencing a “quite uncertain” economic situation and that, in such scenarios, companies tend to slow down or postpone investments . In response, he maintained that the company’s strategy has been to maintain investments in infrastructure and customer service capacity.

“At Scania we have been doing the complete opposite; we have been opening new sites, expanding our capacity, hiring more staff, and investing in tooling,” said Aranda, who added that the expansion will continue to increase service capacity in the country.

In addition to infrastructure, another key element for the used car market is knowing the vehicle’s history . During the presentation, it was detailed that 98% of the vehicles considered were covered by a maintenance policy , allowing their service history to be traced through the brand’s workshops.

For his part, David Hernández, National Manager of Used Vehicles at Scania Mexico, explained that the strategy seeks precisely to extend the life cycle of vehicles and support fleet renewal beyond the sale of new units.

The fleet renewal program for motor transport promoted by the Ministry of Economy (SE) not only seeks to modernize the motor fleet (tractors and trucks) that has an average age of 19.4 years (considering cargo and passenger trucks), but could also become a gateway for more heavy units to begin to be insured, considered Alfredo Careaga, director of Business Development of THB Mexico .

“Overall, we think the initiative is very good in terms of renewing a rather old fleet, and I believe this incentive is positive,” Careaga stated in an interview with T21, adding that the program promoted by the federal government stems from an obvious need: an aging fleet and historical difficulties in accessing financing .

For Careaga, the initiative may have effects that go beyond the purchase of units, particularly in road safety and risk management , although it will be necessary to observe its implementation and the requirements that carriers must meet to access credit.

The modernization program includes financing schemes backed by guarantees from Nacional Financiera (Nafin) for micro and small transport operators with between one and 30 vehicles , who will be able to acquire new or used vehicles. The maximum financing amount under the shared-risk scheme is 15 million pesos or its equivalent in US dollars, and the option to acquire new vehicles will be for up to 84 months with a minimum down payment of 10 percent.

For pre-owned units, the maximum term will be up to 60 months with a minimum down payment of 15 percent .

Although the plan is being implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) , it is part of a broader package announced by the Ministry of Economy within the Mexico Plan to promote the renewal of heavy vehicles. This package includes tax incentives, guarantees, a new Official Mexican Standard, and measures to protect domestic production .

From Careaga’s perspective, one of the biggest benefits of the renewal is the incorporation of technology and safety devices in the new units, such as GPS tracking systems and other elements that can contribute both to fleet monitoring and to a faster response to incidents.

The specialist considered that, if new vehicles must introduce certain measures to access credit, it would create an incentive to improve risk management , especially for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, which usually face greater difficulties in obtaining financing and which, from Careaga’s point of view, are the ones that concentrate older units with fewer safety measures,

Insurance sector, a piece of financing

The participation of the insurance sector could be another factor in determining the program’s scope. Alfredo Careaga stated that insurers are interested in adding new vehicles to their portfolios , particularly those with improved safety features.

The specialist indicated that the renewal could also expand insurance penetration in the motor transport sector.

According to SICT statistics, the fleet serving federal motor transport totaled 762,821 motor units in 2025 , representing an annual increase of 5.4 percent.

Source: SICT.

In the same cycle, the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS) identified 927,978 heavy units —including trucks, tractor-trailers, minibuses, buses and semi-trailers— that were insured.

In that regard, Alfredo Carega suggested that insurance could be more directly linked to loans. If a financial institution provides funds to acquire a vehicle, protecting that asset can reduce the risk of default in the event of an accident or theft .

The executive also considered that the initiative could serve as a first stage to test a scheme that could later be expanded with greater private participation, which would represent an opportunity to support financial institutions and carriers in designing adequate coverage for vehicles acquired under the scheme proposed by the federal government.

In this way, the renewal of the vehicle fleet presents an opportunity that goes beyond taking old units out of circulation: it can link financing, safety and insurance under the same scheme.

2. Increase production capacity in Mexico , with the aim of maintaining competitiveness against other regions with greater manufacturing capacity.

3. Develop a greater national supply chain , strengthening the different levels of suppliers in the chain, from those who supply directly to manufacturers (Tier 1) to the subsequent levels of the chain (Tier 2, Tier 3 and Tier 4).

4. Advance in new technologies , from electric vehicles and natural gas to biofuels and hydrogen, to strengthen the supply produced from Mexico.

The position that the Mexican industry currently occupies gives dimension to that potential: Mexico is the first exporter of tractor-trailers, the fourth global exporter of trucks and buses, and the fifth producer of trucks and buses in the world .

Adding to this scenario is the recent performance of the industry. Between January and August 2026, exports reached 85,687 units , 3.7% more than a year earlier.

Although the United States remains the primary destination, the performance of other markets reveals opportunities to expand the presence of vehicles manufactured in Mexico.
Mexico’s importance as a manufacturing platform is also underpinned by the level of integration of its supply chain with the United States. Arzate explained that Mexican production complements the demand from the U.S., as well as from other export markets and the domestic market.

This relationship goes beyond final assembly.
Mexico’s ability to maintain and expand its international presence will also be linked to the technological evolution of the industry. What happened next highlighted the magnitude of the problem faced by those traveling along that corridor.

“The theft of our vehicle was undoubtedly regrettable, but what is worrying is that in the following two hours four more thefts took place in the same area, and the worst part is that no authority ever showed up, even though the situation was reported from the first theft,” the transporter, who asked to keep his identity confidential, told T21 .

The testimony takes on another dimension after Operation “Swarm ,” carried out on September 7, which resulted in the arrest of Isaac “N,” the Morena party mayor of Esperanza, Puebla; as well as Abigail “N,” former director of municipal Public Security, and Manuel “N,” the mayor’s brother, allegedly linked to a criminal structure connected to cargo truck theft, extortion, kidnapping, and other high-impact crimes on the Puebla-Veracruz highway.

For carriers consulted by T21 , the intervention represents a positive sign, but it also brings back to the table a concern that has plagued the sector for years: what happens when networks linked to cargo theft reach or find protection within the very structures of authority .

Federal and state authorities executed 23 search warrants in the municipality as part of the operation.

Hope, under scrutiny

The relevance of the actions for the road transport sector is related to a problem that precedes the arrests.

Luis Enrique Villatoro Martínez, president of the National Association of Vehicle Tracking and Protection Companies (ANERPV) , reported that, between January and July 2026, 133 cases were recorded in Puebla, representing an approximate decrease of 40% compared to the same period in 2025.

Despite that reduction, Esperanza continued to be one of the focal points of attention , along with the metropolitan area of Puebla.

“With the dismantling of these criminal hotspots or this criminal network that was established in this municipality, we believe that the crime rate will decrease in this area,” Villatoro said.

The corridor’s records also illustrate the scale of the problem. During 2026, the Amozoc–Esperanza section registered 184 cargo truck robberies , compared to 632 cases in 2025 and 672 in 2024, according to information from the Puebla Public Security Secretariat .

“We have suffered through that stretch of road for years.”

Edgar Martínez Chavero, of Transportes Hernie and technical secretary of the Bajío region of the National Chamber of Freight Transportation (Canacar) , stressed that the arrests are good news for those who travel through a region that for years has represented a risk

“This is excellent news […] we as transporters have suffered for years and years from cargo theft on that stretch of highway,” he stated.

Martínez Chavero went even further when referring to what, from the perspective of the transporters, was happening around this criminal activity: he spoke of the involvement of authorities and a dynamic in which part of the stolen merchandise ended up among inhabitants of the area , generating benefits that contributed to normalizing the phenomenon.

However, the businessman avoided making the accusations partisan. “Personally, I wouldn’t label the mayor based on his party affiliation ,” he said, maintaining that the important thing is that federal authorities have taken action against the investigated organization.

For Martínez Chavero, it will now be necessary to prevent the blow to this structure from simply causing the displacement of criminal activity.

“Now, different actions will have to be taken to dismantle that area and protect the surroundings,” he said.

He also identified the stretch from Tecamachalco to Amozoc as another high-incidence area and considered that similar actions should be replicated to continue combating cargo theft.

Dismantle the networks from the root

Villatoro agreed that the scope of the strategy must extend beyond arrests. According to the president of ANERPV, it is necessary to combat not only those directly involved in the crimes, but also the networks of collaboration and protection that enable their operation.

The specialist emphasized that coordination between federal and state authorities, intelligence sharing, and public-private collaboration can contribute to attacking these structures.

“It is necessary to dismantle these networks from the root,” he argued.

He considered that the model applied in Puebla should be reproduced in other entities where similar conditions are observed, including Guanajuato, Jalisco and San Luis Potosí .

For its part, the National Association of Private Transportation (ANTP) also issued a statement after the arrests and acknowledged the investigative and intelligence work carried out by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) , the National Guard (GN), and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) within the framework of Operation “Swarm” .

Ten years ago, Noxguard arrived in Mexico with experience it had already begun building on the other side of the border. Automotive urea and aftertreatment systems had a longer track record in the United States, where regulations had accelerated their adoption, while in the Mexican market this technology was just beginning to gain traction.

This difference in timing allowed the company to transfer to the country some of the experience acquired in the US market, but a decade later it still identifies a pending challenge: expanding knowledge about what automotive urea is , what its function is and how it intervenes in the operation of heavy vehicles.

For Guillermo “Memo” Berriochoa, president of the family business, closing that gap involves providing more information to carriers, operators and personnel in charge of maintaining the units.

“Our goal between now and the end of the year is to bring more education to Mexico, to help everyone understand what automotive urea is and how it can help their operations,” he said in an interview.

The company’s story surrounding this product began even earlier. Berriochoa recounted that more than 16 years ago, his father discovered automotive urea while participating in a project in the United States and found in it an alternative linked to reducing emissions from diesel engines. With the introduction of new regulations in that country, the project formally began operations around 2010.

Years later, the family decided to bring that experience to Mexico.

“We came to Mexico 10 years ago to bring all that knowledge we had in the United States,” Berriochoa explained.

Currently, one of the pending issues identified by Berriochoa is to explain the role that automotive urea plays within selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems and clear up doubts surrounding its use.

During the interview, he emphasized that its main function is related to the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) . He also mentioned benefits related to fuel consumption, although he identified the environmental and health impacts as the most important aspects.

In this scenario, the company seeks to ensure that training accompanies the advancement of this technology in Mexican road transport, particularly among those directly involved in the operation and maintenance of the units .

Daniel’s commute between the cities of Tecomán and Manzanillo, both in Colima and 58 kilometers apart, which normally took him about two hours, turned into an eight-hour ordeal due to the traffic congestion caused by the highway expansion work on the road to Colima. When he finally managed to move forward and reach the port, his fate was sealed: his appointment to enter the terminal had been canceled , and he would have to wait in a nearby yard or at least somewhere safe on the street for a new assignment.

This story—which began on November 25, 2025, during the expansion phase of the Armería-Manzanillo section and has been repeated for the past four years since the start of the entire project—may change its name, route, or merchandise, but behind it all remains the same reality: the customer’s clock keeps ticking even when the truck stops due to circumstances that the carrier can hardly control.

Fuel consumption represents one of the main costs in the operation of motor transport fleets , so improving the performance of the units remains among the points of focus for carriers and manufacturers.

Under this scenario, MAN Truck & Bus has focused part of its strategy in Mexico on powertrain integration and the use of tools that allow managing vehicle performance according to route conditions.

In an interview with T21, Roberto Rodríguez, head of key accounts for MAN Truck & Bus in Mexico, explained that the cost of diesel has a significant impact on operations , and therefore, fuel efficiency is one of the brand’s main focuses.

“The focus on the issue of diesel, undoubtedly, understanding that it is the biggest cost in any of our fleets, is very relevant,” Rodríguez noted.

One of the tools the company is incorporating is EfficientCruise , which uses a topographic map of Mexico to anticipate road characteristics and manage unit performance.

According to Rodríguez, Mexico is the first country outside of Europe to join this platform , whose operation allows the use of torque when road conditions require it and taking advantage of inertia when possible.

The strategy also includes the integration of powertrain components. The executive explained that MAN uses a 12.4-liter D26 engine , an automated transmission whose programming was jointly developed by ZF and MAN, and axles manufactured in-house.

According to Rodríguez, this integration contributes to the company’s focus on fuel economy, in addition to safety-related aspects.

Regarding its commercial performance, MAN registered 23 cargo units sold at retail during July 2026, with a 0.9% share of a market that reached 2,532 units, according to figures from the Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Heavy Vehicles (RAIAVP) disseminated by the National Association of Producers of Buses, Trucks and Tractor-Trailers (ANPACT) .

Adoption also presents challenges

Beyond technology, the executive acknowledged that gaining ground in the Mexican market also presents a challenge, due to the historical presence of conventionally configured vehicles.

“It has undoubtedly been complex. The domestic market is very traditional and obviously uses American-type vehicles, which we call conventional here,” he commented.

Rodríguez explained that one of the ways to advance in this process has been to incorporate units into different fleets so that carriers and operators can test them directly in their operation .

“We’ve managed to get into some fleets to test our truck. There are more and more cab-over trucks on the road, so there’s greater openness,” he said.

He added that, once the units were incorporated, aspects related to safety, comfort, and ergonomics became part of the operators’ experience. This is further enhanced by closer collaboration with key clients to understand fleet needs and make adjustments.

“That interaction has allowed us to improve or refine some points that we have loose ends and give these clients more confidence,” he said.

In this way, MAN’s strategy in Mexico combines the use of tools aimed at improving fuel efficiency with an approach to fleets , in a market where operational performance and diesel-related costs continue to be relevant factors for road transport.
