During the first quarter of the year, the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) became the infrastructure that moved the most cargo in the country, followed by Tijuana, Mérida, and Monterrey.
According to the latest statistics presented by the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC), during this period, AIFA moved 103,932 tons, a figure higher than the 1,800 tons from the same period last year.
It is worth remembering that on February 3, 2023, the government published through the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the decree that put an end to dedicated cargo at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), causing various cargo carriers to migrate to Santa Lucía (AIFA). However, it was not until September of the same year when the total move to this terminal was completed.
Under this scenario, AICM experienced a collapse during the first quarter of 2024 of 61.3%, dropping from 148,041.1 tons to 57,235.6 tons.
The airports of Querétaro, Guadalajara, Cancún, Toluca, and San Luis Potosí also showed negative figures. In contrast, Tijuana, Mérida, and Monterrey experienced growth.
Therefore, from January to March of last year, air cargo in the country grew by 2.7% year-on-year, closing with 297,471.9 tons, 7,791.8 more than in the same period of the previous year.
Domestic cargo showed a decrease of 3%, dropping from 93,458.7 tons to 90,679.6 tons, while internationally, the growth was 5.4%, ending with 206,792.3 tons, 10,570.8 tons more.
At the national level, the route with the highest growth was Monterrey-Mexico, and the route with the greatest decline was Mexico-Guadalajara.
While the international route that experienced an increase was Santa Lucía-Hong Kong, the one that decreased the most was Memphis-Guadalajara.
