Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the launch of the AWS Mexico (Central) region, and as part of its plans, the company plans to invest more than five billion dollars (mdd) in the country over the next 15 years.

“This launch marks an important step as we continue to expand our infrastructure and deliver global innovation in machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and other advanced technologies to our customers,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of Infrastructure Services at AWS.

Kalyanaraman explained that the new AWS region will help companies across Mexico to be at the center of AI and ML innovation, with the help of secure and reliable infrastructure, along with a broad set of technologies.

In this way, developers, startups, entrepreneurs, as well as government, educational and non-profit organizations, will have options to run their applications and provide service to end users from AWS data centers located in Mexico .

“We are proud to deepen our investment in Mexico to help support business transformation, foster technology talent, develop cloud skills, and create opportunities for economic growth,” said Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS.

In parallel with the investment, AWS launched the AWS InCommunities Fund with assets of $300,000 that will be allocated to Querétaro to help local groups, schools, and organizations start new community projects.

During the presentation, Paula Bellizia, CEO for Latin America at AWS, said that the investment will help Mexico position itself as a digital hub and leader in Latin America , as well as modernize the country’s industries thanks to the talent of Mexican workers and the quality of education.

“From our point of view, it is very important to invest in Mexico because it represents a great opportunity, it is very well positioned. Not only for Mexico, but from Mexico to other parts of the world. The country has the conditions to be competitive in various industries and in various parts of the business segment. We have very good expectations… an investment of this magnitude reflects our vision of the future for Mexico,” said the CEO.

For her part, President Claudia Sheinbaum explained that the announcement by AWS is important for the investment per se, as well as for the creation of jobs that are estimated to reach seven thousand positions, in addition to opening up opportunities for Mexican companies to develop.

“ The launch represents an important milestone in Mexico’s digital transformation . AWS’s investment of more than $5 billion will strengthen Mexico’s technological infrastructure and open up new opportunities for innovation, economic growth, digital inclusion, and job creation,” said Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s Secretary of Economy.

With the AWS Mexico (Central) region, AWS now has 114 Availability Zones in 36 geographic regions; specifically, in the country it consists of three Availability Zones located far enough apart to support customers’ business continuity, but close enough to provide low latency for highly available applications that use multiple Availability Zones, AWS explained.

The company explained that the AWS Mexico (Central) region will allow customers with data residency preferences to securely store their content in Mexico, achieve even lower latency, and meet the demand for cloud services throughout Latin America.

“We are here to stay in Mexico, because this investment is much more than just building cutting-edge data centers; it is a decisive and sustained commitment to the socioeconomic growth and digital future of this great country and of all Mexicans,” added AWS CEO for Latin America.

AWS offers a broader and more comprehensive portfolio of services, including analytics, computing, databases, IoT, generative AI, machine learning, mobile, storage, and other cloud technologies,”

“The launch of the AWS Mexico (Central) Region will strengthen our country’s digital infrastructure and open up new opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable socioeconomic growth, in line with our vision of a more connected and competitive Mexico,” said Altagracia Gómez Sierra, coordinator of the President’s Business Council.

Finally, Mauricio Kuri, Governor of Querétaro, stated, “AWS’ unprecedented investment in data center infrastructure places Querétaro and Mexico at the digital forefront of Latin America, establishing a new benchmark in technological innovation.”
