The revenues of wholesale and retail commercial companies in Mexico registered a mixed behavior in June 2026, with decreases at a monthly rate, but with annual increases, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

Based on the Monthly Survey on Commercial Enterprises (EMEC), which reports on the current economic behavior of the main variables of domestic trade in the country, real income from the supply of goods and services by wholesale commercial enterprises decreased by 1.2% on a monthly basis in the sixth month of the year.

The number of people employed in this segment decreased by 0.8%, while average wages increased by 0.4% in June 2026 compared to last May.

On an annual basis, wholesale businesses saw a 12.9% increase in revenue. They also registered a 0.9% decrease in employment and a 1.5% increase in average real wages.

Meanwhile, retail trade saw a monthly decline of 0.2% in its revenues and a negative variation of 0.7% in the workforce, although average real wages showed a monthly increase of 0.1 percent.

In June 2026, retail businesses reported a 2% annual increase in their income from the supply of goods and services —the amount obtained from production, marketing or service provision activities—, while the number of employees fell by 0.4% and wages increased by 5.2% year-on-year.

By subsector, wholesale trade, agricultural and forestry raw materials for industry, and waste materials showed the best performance in terms of income from supplies, with a positive variation of 22.4% compared to June 2025. This was followed by pharmaceutical products, perfumery, leisure items, small household appliances and white goods with an annual increase of 15.8%.

Conversely, textiles and footwear was the activity with the largest drop in the cycle, with an annual decline of 5.7 percent.

The subsector with the highest revenue in retail was exclusively through the internet and printed catalogs, television, and similar channels, at 23.2 percent. Self-service and department stores saw the largest decrease, with an annual decline of 2.3 percent.

One factor that influenced the behavior of the Mexican commercial sector last June was the World Cup, which, although it did generate an economic impact on trade and consumption in the country, did not represent a sustained or generalized boost.

According to the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco-Servytur) , the economic impact did not reach the 65 billion pesos (mdp) expected during the development of the world game, and would have remained between 45 and 50 billion pesos, of which 15 billion pesos would be for additional consumption by Mexican households, destined for food, beverages, entertainment and convenience products.

“The IMOAM has established itself as a reliable estimation tool and is continuously evaluated by comparing it with the IMAI,” the agency stated.

Its objective is to provide a projection of the monthly behavior of Mexican manufacturing production activity.

The manufacturing industry is one of the most important in the country, as it represents about 20% of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and more than 80% of total merchandise exports.

MAJALCA, CHIH.- Fatigue sets in during a night’s journey. After hours behind the wheel and with the cargo still far from its destination, stopping to rest would seem logical, but for truck drivers, finding a safe place to do so remains one of the challenges on the country’s highways.

The problem combines two risks that coexist during the journey : fatigue accumulated from long hours of operation and the insecurity that can arise when stopping. Finding a place to pause also involves considering the driver’s safety, the security of the truck and the cargo, making rest a necessity that is not always easy to fulfill.

This is the reality that drivers constantly express, hence the need to create safe spaces for them. The private sector achieved this; on this occasion, it was OXXO Gas , which, in coordination with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), inaugurated the first OXXO Gas Safe Stop, a Travel Center with Comprehensive Services, in Majalca, Chihuahua, which had been announced in recent days by the federal government.

The space aims to concentrate in one place conditions for the safekeeping of units and goods, as well as services that allow operators to stop and rest before continuing their journey .

The need is not lost on those behind the wheel. During the inauguration, one of the operators recounted that he cannot stop just anywhere on his routes for safety reasons and recalled that he has even been the victim of assault and the theft of a truck.

“This project was designed to benefit the carrier, understanding the needs and challenges they face on the road,” explained Carlos Aguirre Quiroga, B2B director of OXXO Gas, in an interview with T21.

The executive pointed out that the objective goes beyond fuel supply, aiming to provide operators with the necessary services to rest and continue their journey in one place.

The complex required an investment of over 100 million pesos (MXN) , occupies more than 35,000 square meters (m²) , and is expected to benefit around 480,000 users annually . Aguirre explained that approximately 13,000 vehicles , including heavy trucks and light vehicles, pass through this area daily.

The rest stop has capacity for 37 units, including full configurations , in addition to six or seven temporary spaces for stays of between 30 minutes and one hour, intended for those who only need to use some service before continuing their journey.

This site offers rest areas, restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, food options, fuel, and mechanical assistance. During the tour of the facilities, it was reported that there are 10 showers, eight for men and two for women .

Resting is also part of road safety

Beyond the protection of the units and goods, the opening of the complex brought to the table another component of road safety: the conditions available for operators to comply with their rest periods.

“Rest is also part of road safety,” said Alex Theissen, president of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Private Transportation (ANTP) .

Theissen explained that a safe road depends not only on the conditions of the infrastructure, signage or vehicles, but also on having places that allow operators to stop, rest and then continue their journey in suitable conditions.

In that regard, Tania Carro Toledo, Undersecretary of Communications and Transportation of the SICT, recalled that NOM-087 establishes maximum driving times and mandatory rest periods for operators.

The official stated that compliance with these periods helps reduce the risk of accidents associated with fatigue and protects both operators and other road users.

But rest isn’t just about having a place to stop. The safety of the driver, the vehicle, and the cargo are the other components the rest stop aims to address.

In that regard, Carlos Aguirre also explained that the complex has access control, cameras, and private security. Furthermore, a barracks for the National Guard was built , with the intention of ensuring a permanent presence of its personnel on the premises.

These measures are complemented by private security patrols and video surveillance, while the parking facility allows cargo units to remain within the complex during rest periods.

The location also takes into account the area’s logistical flow . The project is situated near Federal Route 45, which connects Chihuahua with Ciudad Juárez, identified by the SICT as one of the main corridors for the movement of people and goods to the northern border, Aguirre explained.

More inns in the sights

The opening in Majalca is part of the actions announced days ago by the federal government to strengthen highway safety, including the implementation of the C4 Highway Command Center and the development of a network of 15 safe rest stops. The OXXO Gas complex is the first of these locations to become operational.

Carro Toledo explained that, after this first opening, the SICT has authorization to continue with the development of the executive project for nine other rest stops , while five additional ones are in the process of review, to complete the 15 contemplated.

OXXO Gas has not yet decided where its next project will be located. Aguirre explained that the company is analyzing its network of service stations and various highways to identify locations where the concept could be replicated.

“We are conducting analyses to understand what the next rest stops we could build might be,” he said.

For now, he added, the priority will be to ensure that the Majalca complex meets the needs of the transporters before moving on to other locations.

For Theissen, the need goes beyond a facility.

“Mexico needs a network of safe rest stops that supports the growth of its logistics activity and at the same time recognizes the fundamental role of those who travel our roads every day,” he said.

Grupo Aeroméxico reported that the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit ruled in favor of its alliance with Delta Air Lines and nullified the order of the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) , which terminated the approval of the joint collaboration agreement between both airlines, as well as its antitrust immunity.

Antitrust immunity allows two airlines authorized by the competent authorities to coordinate certain commercial and operational decisions , and without that authorization, they could face restrictions arising from competition laws.

“ As a result, the joint venture agreement and its antitrust immunity remain in effect , allowing Aeromexico and Delta to continue offering greater connectivity, a broader network, more convenient service options, and greater competition for customers traveling between Mexico and the United States,” the company said in a statement.

However, the Mexican airline, led by Andrés Conesa, stated that it is reviewing the Court’s opinion and possible next steps with Delta and its legal advisors.

In September of last year, the United States Department of Transportation decided to terminate the antitrust alliance between Aeromexico and Delta Air Lines, because it considered that it generated anti-competitive effects , arguing that Mexico had supposedly not respected the Air Transport Agreement signed in 2015 , so the termination would come into effect on January 1, 2026.

“This action is necessary due to the anti-competitive effects in the Mexico City and United States markets, which provide an unfair advantage to Delta and Aeromexico as two dominant competitors and create unacceptable real and potential harm to stakeholders, including consumers,” the agency said.

According to the final document, the DOT explained that the implications go beyond Mexico City, affecting competition for passengers and cargo operations in additional markets between the two countries.

In that regard, Aeromexico and Delta went to court and in November 2025 obtained a suspension of the measure while the litigation was being resolved.

The Court’s ruling of August 20 allows the two companies to maintain their cooperation on the routes and services included within the alliance .

For Aeromexico, the court ruling also means the preservation of a cooperation model that is key to strengthening its competitiveness against other airlines that operate routes between the two countries.

It is worth remembering that, in July 2025, the DOT had identified that the limitation of slots (takeoff and landing times) at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and the relocation of dedicated cargo planes to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) allowed the alliance between Delta and Aeroméxico to consolidate its position in passengers and cargo, with the Mexican airline having the largest share in the cross-border cargo market.

At the time, Delta and Aeromexico argued that ending their alliance would lead to the cancellation of routes between Mexico and the United States; in addition, it would cause an economic impact of $800 million and lead to an increase in ticket prices.

For its part, the DOT had argued that continuing the alliance would lead to significant problems, such as higher fares in some markets , stifled innovation, reduced capacity (including frequencies and new routes), difficulties in “doing business” for U.S. airlines, and other impediments for established competitors and new entrants.

As a result of improved performance in the services sector —which includes activities such as transportation and storage—, Mexican economic activity would have grown in July 2026.

The Timely Indicator of Economic Activity (IOAE), prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) , anticipated an annual increase of 2.7% in Mexican economic activity in the seventh month of the year.

In its monthly measurement, the indicator would also have shown a positive figure, registering an increase of 0.1% last July.

This rebound signals a moderate economic expansion in Mexico , coupled with a slowdown in inflation, which in July 2026 stood at 3.12% compared to its annual comparison.

According to the Inegi report, by economic activity groups, an annual increase of 1.8% is expected in secondary activities —manufacturing and construction—.

In tertiary activities , which include services such as commerce, transport and storage, communications, education and health, an increase of 2.8% per year is estimated.

By July 2026, the IOAE projected an annual growth of 2.7% in the Global Indicator of Economic Activity (IGAE) .

On a monthly basis, the IGAE, as well as secondary and tertiary activities, are expected to register an increase of 0.1% by July 2026.

The IOAE estimate for the seventh month of the year shows a positive performance of secondary and tertiary activities in Mexico, both on a monthly and annual basis, which, if it materializes, would mean a respite for the Mexican economy, since it would begin the third quarter of the year with slight growth.

The IOAE is a statistical tool that allows anticipating the behavior of the IGAE, as well as secondary and tertiary activities, up to five weeks in advance, according to Inegi.

Women’s participation in the Mexican labor market reached 46.3% in 2024 , according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) ; however, there are some sectors that are below average, such as the maintenance and support sector for heavy vehicles.

While women are estimated to have a participation of close to 21% of total jobs in the automotive industry , in the heavy vehicle maintenance and technical support segment it is only 11.5 percent.

In response to this reality, the Technicians and Engineers of the Future program was conceived as part of Scania’s Women Driving Change project , where, according to Alejandro Mondragón, president and CEO of the brand in Mexico, it is the result of the passion for this type of initiative, the support of the entire board , and being aligned with the personal values of the members of the corporation.

Mondragón acknowledged that, as with any corporation, profitability is pursued, but this type of initiative changes paradigms, addresses the reality of the industry that requires skilled talent and that this need will become increasingly profound. Therefore, the objective is to raise awareness in the industry and encourage more companies to participate in these types of actions, and by filling these positions, productivity will be achieved.

Ana Laura Islas Tello, People Development & Sustainable Culture Manager of Scania Mexico, described that the initiative is part of their United Nations Global Compact strategies , and is a business strategy for Scania based on having more diversity of thought, and better products and services.

Starting point

The Technicians and Engineers of the Future program graduated the first nine women of this initiative, who are joining Scania’s maintenance and service activities for, in this case, the northern area of the Valley of Mexico.

Ana Laura Islas acknowledged that the Scania Drivers program identified an area of opportunity in terms of women’s representation, in order to begin building relationships with academia to promote the training of more women in STEM careers (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and in disciplines related to the transportation sector.

This effort involves joint work with the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ) in Mexico, ProSociedad and Grupo CEDVA with the project to reach 15 female technicians and 45 female engineers annually for the next three years .

Islas emphasized that the brand’s entire effort is focused on ensuring that the graduates remain committed to working for Scania , and if they do leave the company, an effort will be made for the benefit of the industry as a whole.

Comprehensive vision

Although the Technicians and Engineers of the Future program aims to train specialists for the automotive industry, the curriculum is comprehensive and complements their technical training.

Therefore, in addition to STEM skills, they also receive soft skills training . “This program complements their academic training, with applications such as leadership workshops, resume writing, and interview preparation. We are becoming advisors for their professional careers ,” highlighted Adriana Davy, Marketing and Communications Manager at Scania Mexico.

“Another topic we talk about a lot is sisterhood. It’s normal for classrooms to be all girls, so sometimes they’re not used to being among women, and this type of training also aims to address emotional issues,” Davy added.

Among other topics, personal finances are addressed , along with advice on managing their resources, because there is an awareness that some of these women may be the economic support of their households.

Although only technicians graduated in this first generation , some are engineering students and the goal is for them to also participate in the other program, which lasts for a year of training instead of three weeks .

For Scania’s executives, the goal is clear: to trigger the participation of more companies and the training of more women with the skills required by the industry, which will also allow them to change their lives and those of their families.

New technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) in logistics and supply chain in Mexico allow for greater control in operations, security and more efficiency, agreed industry specialists.

Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, regional manager of Transportation at Grupo Bimbo , considered the use of AI to be fundamental, as it is a new way of working and managing.

“AI won’t take your job, but someone who knows how to use artificial intelligence can put your job at risk. The best players are those who understand the rules of the business, the operational rules, and they are the ones who encourage you to use these kinds of tools for the benefit of the organization,” he emphasized.

During the panel “Leveraging technology towards efficiency in logistics operations”, held by the National Council of Executives in Logistics and Supply Chain (ConaLog) , he commented that the company has registered more than 115 million pesos (mdp) in savings in the last three years , derived from the implementation of various technological tools.

“That’s what technology has helped us with, especially in driver safety and improving customer service levels. It starts with safety (the implementation of technologies), but one effect is profitability, optimizations, and monetary gains. Initially, it was about monitoring and reviewing, ensuring the safety of our drivers by observing their driving habits and focusing on safety and security . One effect of this is preventing costs, theft, or accidents,” he explained.

In 2025 alone, the company recorded seven thefts of units, while so far this year, two have been recovered, he recalled.

“For us, given the country’s road network and socio-demographic characteristics, technology is essential in cases of roadblocks or robberies; we plan our routes or detours, seeking the best alternative to ensure we can reach our customers and return the next day to sell,” he explained.

Carlos González, CIO of TDR Transportes , explained that for the company, technology is not a tool isolated from operators and administrators. “What we have implemented is a comprehensive ecosystem , an orchestrator where we centralize all the information from the entire cycle to improve operational control, support our operators, and enhance the customer experience.” He specified that these tools have allowed them to take positive actions in their operations.

Erik Markeset, CEO of Tsol , explained that there are three groups of AI: machine learning , which is the system that deduces patterns; generative AI , which allows human-like interaction and can generate code or speech; and agentic AI , which is assigned certain tasks simulating a human being.

He explained that an example of agentic AI is the interaction via WhatsApp with an operations manager of a transport company who receives a large number of messages asking about the status of a customer’s shipment, where the use of telemetry allows knowing data such as the location of the unit without human intervention.

Alejandro Pineda, Director of Logistics Solutions at RECSOLOG , explained that technology is a tool that advances every day, and those who “don’t embrace it risk getting lost along the way.
