ARTF publishes figures again; rail freight movement grows slightly in 2024

The Mexican Railway System transported 132.69 million tons last year.

After almost six months without publishing operational and safety figures, the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) reported that during 2024, freight movement by rail grew slightly by 0.92% compared to 2023 .

During the mentioned period, the Mexican Railway System (SFM) transported 132.69 million tons, compared to 131.48 million tons in 2023 .

International traffic transported 96.03 million tons , corresponding to a growth of 2.17%, while imports increased 3.62% and reached 73.65 million tons.

However, exports decreased 2.31% to 22.38 million tons. Domestic traffic fell 2.22% to 36.66 million tons.

 

In December 2024, 10.53 million tons were transported, representing a 0.01% variation compared to the same month in 2023.

The ARTF stated that of the 132.69 million tons, Ferromex and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) of Mexico together moved 86% of the country’s cargo.

He specified that the Grupo México Transportes (GMXT) subsidiary went from 61.66 million tons in 2023 to 62.45 million tons in 2024, which meant a growth of 1.28%, while Ferrosur fell 7.38%, since it transported 14.57 million tons last year compared to 15.73 million tons in 2023.

In the period January-December 2024, a total of 132.69 million tons were transported, of which 63.74 million tons (48.04%) were industrial products , 38.08 million tons (28.70%) agricultural products, 17.14 million tons (12.92%) petroleum products and their derivatives, mineral products with 7.10 million tons (5.35%) and the remainder corresponded to forestry, inorganic and animal derivatives products, which together transported 6.63 million tons (4.99%).

Compared to 2023, those that showed the greatest increase were animal derivatives (13.68%) , agricultural derivatives (8.34%) and petroleum and its derivatives (6.96%), while mineral and inorganic derivatives fell 22.21% and 12.37%, respectively.

Regarding the movement of basic basket products, the ARTF detailed that it went from 24.64 million tons in 2023 to 26.98 million tons in 2024, which meant a growth of 9.4% year-on-year .
