The National Association of Private Transport (ANTP) indicated that during the past year, more companies in Mexico have opted to use multimodal and intermodal transport to move their cargo.
Francisco Kim, president of the ANTP Railway and Multimodal Committee, told T21 that the organization is very concerned about the development of these modes of transport due to their complementarity and contribution to logistics.
“Interest is generated not only by costs, but also by logistical efficiency, it improves processes and it is another option, and that is why companies have become interested and it has been growing. It requires a more refined service design, but once developed, there are magnificent advantages,” he explained.
He said that 10 companies have joined the multimodal and intermodal sectors, and that there are already more companies interested.
However, he mentioned that the “socialization” of these modes of transport is necessary so that companies have more information, “we have to promote them for the benefit of the country’s logistics infrastructure.”
Regarding the implementation of the “emissions calculator” for multimodal transport, Kim commented that they continue to work together with the German company GIZ on the methodology and calculations for its creation.
“We are working on this methodology so that companies can adapt it to their supply chain, since the elements that are considered for emissions change depending on the chain, so that making a comparison between road transport and intermodal transport reduces emissions by almost 70%. It helps with the issue of the environmental impact generated by transport,” he said.
He explained that this project is being pilot tested, and although it will be for ANTP companies, other companies will also be able to use it.
“We want this pilot to be as precise as possible because we had an agreement with GIZ from the United Nations Framework Agreement and from all the sciences that calculate emissions and we do not want to come out with something that is not giving precise information. By mid-2025 we can already see it operating,” he said.
