During his swearing-in as the new president of the National Association of Vehicle Tracking, Security and Protection Companies (ANERPV) , Luis Villatoro stated that in the future the group will face various challenges, mainly the ability to link the technology generated by the private sector with the intelligence centers of the most representative entities in terms of incidence of cargo theft , with the goal of having a prompt response when vehicles and cargo are stolen.
Villatoro explained that with the entry of the new federal administration, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, ANERPV seeks to further strengthen the relationship with both federal and state authorities. “It is essential to be able to work in terms of intelligence with the various C5s of the entities,” he said.
The new leader of ANERPV receives a strong and consolidated association. “After 21 years we are a representative body in terms of cooperation with the authorities, I assume the presidency of an ANERPV that has a perfectly structured program, with an advanced technological platform that is CENTINELA. Also with an operating capacity of agreements with federative entities and with the federal Government, all this allows us to be a strong and important association that is a fundamental element for the security of vehicles and merchandise on the roads to be increasingly stronger today,” Villatoro explained to T21.
Among the long-term plans that the new president has is to turn training into extensive professionalization for police forces and the logistics sector . In addition, he explained that another guiding principle is the development of technology, since ANERPV members are not only consumers of technology, but also developers of it.
For his part, David Román, outgoing president of ANERPV, stressed that in three years, nearly 4.5 billion pesos worth of vehicles have been recovered thanks to the aforementioned agreements. He also indicated that the association has trained more than a thousand people.
Vehicle theft on the decline
The data held by the association indicates that the theft of cargo vehicles has stabilized nationwide, from January to November 2024 around 1,500 incidents were recorded , which represents a reduction of between 5 and 9%, depending on the entity. Despite the reduction in crime, it is pertinent to note that eight out of 10 crimes that are committed and have an investigation file are related to some degree of violence against the operators.
Villatoro explained that the low figures are largely due to the coordinated work between the private sector and federal, state and municipal authorities, as well as with prosecutors, security forces such as the National Guard and the various police forces in the country.
However, he clarified that there are states where the figures are increasing, such as Puebla , which has concentrated the majority of the incidents that have occurred this year. The president of the association explained that, although the authorities are working to combat crime, theft has not been stopped.
The positive side of the situation is that 2024 became the year in which a significant number of heavy vehicles were recovered. “Cargo units representing around 200 million pesos were recovered,” said Villatoro.
