Tolls are a cost that impacts the financial structure of trucking companies and, in many cases, due to the cost they represent, on certain routes users are responsible for covering the payment .
Since April 15, the Government of Nuevo León began operating a new toll booth to access the Colombia Bridge to cross into Laredo, Texas, which means a double toll must be covered in less than 500 meters .
Last week, Miguel Ángel Martínez Millán, president of the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) , visited the Colombia Bridge to express his views after the Board of Directors meeting held in Monterrey, Nuevo León.
“We came to confirm that at the Colombia Bridge that connects with Laredo, Texas, we are paying one hundred pesos for four, five, six and nine axle trucks, and that is exactly what we want to discuss with the Government of Nuevo León to reach an agreement and be able to remove and eliminate (sic) the charge at this border crossing. We will inform you of the results,” said Miguel Ángel Martínez in a message through his X account.
The day after the Canacar president’s statement, Nuevo León Governor Samuel García held an event to kick off the rehabilitation of import lanes at this border port , without any statement regarding the tolls at this point.
According to state government data, more than 800 crossings are made daily across the Colombia Bridge , although during the crisis caused by the closure of operations in Nuevo Laredo, more than 8,000 crossings have been processed . In addition, hazardous materials must be handled at this point.
More than 18,000 import and export crossings are handled through the Nuevo Laredo border port .
