The Mexican Intermodal Transport Association (AMTI) and the National Association of Vehicle Tracking and Protection Companies (ANERPV) will sign a collaboration agreement to address the insecurity experienced in this segment.
Diego Anchustegui, president of AMTI, explained that although theft incidence in intermodal transport is 0.5%, there are routes with a greater impact .
“We’re working together to use the information ANERPV already has on trucking robberies to test the same in intermodal transport. Where are they hitting us? What’s the robbery? What can we do and what strategies can we implement on the train?” he emphasized during the discussion “Intermodal and Foreign Trade, Challenges for 2025 ,” organized by ANERPV.
He explained that criminal gangs stop the train or, when the unit is off an intermodal ramp, board the vehicle and begin stealing the goods.
In this regard, he noted that insecurity is currently one of the greatest challenges facing transportation , and it has also impacted the supply chain, causing, among other things, a shortage of operators.
“Insecurity is causing other very serious issues within the supply chain, and the main problem is the lack of operators; we’re short 50,000. Being an operator has always been complicated. Operators don’t know if they’ll arrive, they can’t travel at night in certain parts of the country, where they can’t stop for the first 400 kilometers of a route. Calling or monitoring various issues are positive, but in the end, we’re affecting them and making their jobs more difficult,” he said.
He commented that to address insecurity, companies are investing in technology , such as installing cameras on trucks and containers, but are reviewing other options such as RFID ( Radio Frequency Identification ) seals for security and tracking purposes.
Given this scenario, Anchustegui believes it is also necessary to work together with the authorities on various issues, such as better wages and safe shelters, among others.
“We need technology and the ability to monitor the units, otherwise we’d have a lot of thefts or damage to our shipments; unfortunately, we need a lot of technology inside the trucks,” he explained.
He considered that road safety needs to be improved, across the country as a whole and not just at one stop.
