Amazon Mexico has expanded its logistics infrastructure with a new delivery station in Saltillo, Coahuila , which began operating last week, bringing the total number of stations that the marketplace giant has in the country to 25, according to Diego Méndez de la Luz , General Director of Operations for Amazon Mexico.
“We are not going to inaugurate this operation today, but we are launching it just in time for El Buen Fin, we operate it, we do all that and we hold an external inauguration event,” the executive clarified in an interview with T21 .
He also reported that tomorrow he will participate in an event with the Government of Nuevo León to celebrate the inauguration of a shipping center (where customer orders are collected, packaged and fulfilled) in Apodaca, which was in the testing phase.
The facility has a maximum capacity of approximately 900,000 items and a surface area of 386,000 square feet , equivalent to six football fields.
This year the company also opened another shipping center in Guadalajara , Jalisco , with an approximate maximum capacity of 750 thousand items and a surface area of 328 thousand square feet .
With these additions, Amazon Mexico has 13 shipping centers , three logistics centers and 25 delivery stations , thereby strengthening its logistics network in the country.
Diego Méndez de la Luz said that building a new facility requires planning for at least two years, and that in the end the customer is the one who wins because deliveries are much faster.
“To build a shipping center, we have to plan it at least two years in advance, because it means going to get the land, starting to build the building, since the building already exists, which takes months or a year, we have to put in all the machinery that goes inside, we have to hire and train people,” he explained.
Regarding the announcement of an investment of approximately six billion dollars (mdd) in Mexico by Amazon, which was made by President Claudia Sheinbaum after the US-Mexico CEO Dialogue summit last October, Méndez de la Luz specified that the investment will be for Amazon Web Services (AWS) , which is the division in which they offer innovations through the cloud.
“This part of the data storage and processing infrastructure is very specific, and is something that has been growing a lot, and this investment is specifically in AWS infrastructure,” the executive stressed.
AWS powers a variety of digital services, from streaming entertainment on Netflix and Prime Video to real-time sports analytics and more, all from its data centers.
He recalled that since 2015, when Amazon Mexico began operations, more than 110 billion pesos have been invested in the country , including infrastructure and compensation for its employees , which add up to more than 10 thousand directly throughout the Mexican Republic.
Diego Méndez assured that investments in Mexico will continue in the various solutions offered by the firm, such as Amazon Studios , which is its content production division, as well as in sponsorships, specifically in the Vive Latino music festival .
The executive highlighted that they have same-day delivery service in more than 10 cities in the country , and next-day delivery in 83, and assured that, looking to 2025, they seek to go beyond the standard that exists in the country in terms of delivery time and to offer solutions that facilitate the daily tasks of their users, and even to bring merchandise and products from the United States.
“So you can expect there to continue to be a huge focus on having more products, having them faster, closer to the customer with the same reliability as always,” he said.
Amazon is also aiming to decarbonize its operations in Mexico , something they seek to achieve, among other actions, by analyzing routes and distances in order to build a logistics system so that packages are delivered more quickly and efficiently, which helps generate fewer emissions.
