In the logistics chain there is an actor that stands out for the value it brings to international trade: the shipping agent .
In Mexico, shipping agents have existed for more than 100 years , some of their agencies are even about to reach 140 years of service.
The Mexican Association of Shipping Agents (Amanac) , chaired by Fernando Con y Ledesma, celebrates this Tuesday 37 years of representing the interests of this union before authorities, service providers and unions of maritime port workers, among others.
“We are responsible to the authorities for what may happen to the ships, such as damage to the facilities; bringing merchandise that is not documented; We are in charge and responsible for ensuring that the ships comply with international regulations upon arrival. We coordinate the arrival and sail of the ships; With some shipping lines we coordinate the land transportation of goods and their release before the terminals and customs agents; “We help shipping lines optimize their costs with local suppliers,” Andrés Echeverría, general director of Transpac México , a shipping agency that in 2023 alone served more than 1,100 vessels, told T21.
Amanac groups around 70 shipping agencies that represent 95% of ship calls , facilitating the movement of approximately 95% of cargo in Mexican ports. In the tourism field, it collaborates closely with the main cruise lines.
In the first six months of this year, Mexican ports have handled the arrival of 10,203 vessels transporting all types of merchandise, a number 5.5% lower than that registered in the same cycle a year before, according to data from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine , of the Secretariat of the Navy .
In addition, the celebration of Amanac is accompanied by the celebration of Shipping Agent Day , a date that has been registered since 2022 in the Calendar of commemorations, remembrances and celebrations linked to civil society organizations, of the Ministry of the Interior .
