It is important to take advantage of the opportunity that is emerging in the logistics market in the sense of linking this sector with technology based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) , as well as big data , to have timely monitoring of the products that leave the warehouse or distribution center, according to César Morales , a specialist in materials and logistics planning.
He said that this situation is not yet occurring in several companies, which is why they are still lagging behind in implementing such technological resources in their operations.
In an interview with T21 , he stated that adapting AI and other technological tools to the logistics process allows companies to track the progress of the products being delivered to the end consumer, so that they arrive on time and in the correct manner.
The above, Morales indicated, is also a matter of security , since crimes such as highway robberies impact the logistics industry.
According to data from State of Logistics 2024 , 74% of logistics companies in Mexico are still not fully technologically interconnected , which limits their productivity and security.
In this regard, the unified security technology provider company, Genetec , identified that the lack of investment in physical security and the shortage of specialized talent put the protection of logistics and transportation infrastructures at risk .
César Morales pointed out that due to the insecurity in the sector, several companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seek to have authorized third parties, such as DHL or UPS , to control their inventories, which is why he considered the use of technology in logistics to be a key point .
“There are many circumstances in which organized crime is evaluating the goods that are leaving, not only from production plants, but also from plants that are evaluating the shipment of raw materials and semi-finished products. By making these types of connections, there is practically an opportunity for these small and medium-sized companies to follow up in a timely manner, in order to make deliveries in a timely manner,” he stressed.
The consultant and academic also pointed out that in the end what is sought with the integration of AI with logistics is that the processes remain established and that this link serves as a bridge “not only with local suppliers, but also national and international ones, thus seeking a link with which we have the products in an optimal and timely manner.”
According to Samsara , 94% of operations leaders believe it is necessary to invest in AI solutions to stay competitive, and 87% of companies plan to increase their investment in AI in the next 12 months, although Mexico still faces significant challenges in terms of investment, regulation and government support.
Meanwhile, the cargo and logistics market in the country was estimated at 136.11 billion dollars (mdd) in 2024, with a growth projection of up to 171.40 billion dollars in 2029 , according to Mordor Intelligence .
