The cancellation of routes by Mexicana de Aviación will reduce the air connection of Nuevo Laredo , in Tamaulipas, the most important border point in the commercial relationship between Mexico and the United States.
Only Aeroméxico and Viva Aerobus will continue to have flights to that city in the north of the country.
From January to October of last year, trade between the two countries through the Laredo border port totaled a value of 30.5 billion dollars (mdd), of which the country’s exports were worth 18.9 billion dollars, while Mexican imports from the United States were worth 11.6 billion dollars.
According to data from the United States Department of Commerce , the accumulated figures amount to 285 billion dollars in foreign trade operations between both countries. Exports to the United States amounted to 176 billion dollars, while in the opposite direction they amounted to 108 billion dollars.
The Mexican government said yesterday that the cancellation of routes by Mexicana de Aviación is due to the fact that they will carry out a review of the strategic plan of the airline that celebrated one year of operations on December 26.
“A review is being carried out. Some of the planes are also rented, so they have to renew this lease. The new planes are going to arrive and a review is being carried out like in any company: which routes had the most passengers? Which routes had the least?” said Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, during her morning press conference.
Through a notice on its website, the airline announced that it will ground eight routes starting January 6 of this year (Acapulco, Campeche, Guadalajara, Ixtapa, Nuevo Laredo, Puerto Vallarta, Uruapan and Villahermosa) .
According to the statistical report of the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) , Mexicana de Aviación handled 256,091 passengers from January to November of last year . In addition, it is worth noting that this agency reports that by the eleventh month this airline only handles seven routes .
While in cargo, whose handling began in October 2023, through “Mexicana Cargo Services” it has mobilized more than 114 tons , projecting that this amount will increase in 2025 with the opening of the service in Guadalajara, Mérida, San José del Cabo and Tulum.
Until October 2024, it operated with three aircraft , two leased from the airline TAR with a capacity of 50 passengers.
It is worth mentioning that starting in May 2025, the incorporation of the first Embraer E2 aircraft is expected , out of a total of 20 that will be received gradually until 2027, which are equipped with advanced technology and for which more than 20 billion pesos will be invested.
Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the Mexicana de Aviación Master Plan will be announced this week , however, she assured that “it will continue to be the company of the people of Mexico, it will continue to fly, and there is nothing more than simply a review of its strategic plan for 2025.”
