For the second day in a row, producers affiliated with the National Union of Agricultural Workers (UNTA) are maintaining blockades on various highways in Mexico , demanding fair prices for corn and sorghum crops. This has affected the transport of goods and could cause “serious economic repercussions in the supply chain ,” warned the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) .
The organization expressed its concern about the blockades, noting that the impacts are occurring on various roads in the country, which are key logistics corridors for the transportation of goods in Mexico , “since food, raw materials, fuel, industrial products, and basic consumer goods are transported along these routes.”
“Every hour of disruption to road traffic causes millions of dollars in economic losses, affects the productivity of freight transport companies, puts operators’ physical safety at risk, delays freight deliveries, and hinders the supply of essential products for millions of Mexican families,” Canacar stated in a statement.
The organization stated that it is “sensitive to the demands of Mexican agricultural producers; however, measures such as roadblocks are not the way to achieve lasting solutions.” Therefore, it called for dialogue between authorities at all three levels of government and producers to avoid further impacts.
