Road safety certification launched: what does it entail?

The initiative combines training, technology, and self-regulation to reduce accidents.

SAN JUAN DEL RÍO, QRO.- Alex Theissen Long, president of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Private Transportation (ANTP) , announced the creation of a road safety certification , which seeks to establish a single standard for the industry.

Within the framework of the 9th National Road Safety Congress , organized by ANTP, it was indicated that the idea is for operators, companies, manufacturers, and authorities to join forces to enhance the culture of prevention.

The initiative comes after nearly a year of work analyzing existing programs and identifying gaps, Theissen explained in an interview with T21.

The model begins with operators , as they are the main factor in accidents worldwide. “That’s why we started with them,” explained Theissen, who clarified that the certification is not limited to ANTP member companies, but is aimed at any carrier interested in raising their safety standards.

As a first step, the ANTP will launch the Master Drivers program , which will begin on September 18 with a group of double-trailer operators. The goal is to offer them advanced training so they can become instructors within their own companies and teach road safety best practices to their teams.

It’s not about duplicating what schools or companies already do, but rather taking it to the next level. “We want to give them a master’s level so these operator instructors can learn and pass it on to each company,” Theissen added.

The second axis is technology . From systems in new vehicles to solutions that can be installed in operating units, the ANTP has proposed a technical update schedule that will determine the adoption of innovations over three to six years. The goal is to make it easier for both a single truck and a large fleet to justify and adopt tools that reduce road risks, Theissen said.

The certification will also integrate the experience accumulated over more than 25 years with the National Road Safety Award , free self-assessment schemes , and self-regulation programs , where companies commit to implementing and demanding compliance with regulations from those they serve.

For Theissen, the goal is clear: to reduce accidents by 50% in a decade . It won’t be an easy task, but he’s confident that with a combination of training, technology, and corporate commitment, it can be achieved. “The most important thing is that road safety is everyone’s responsibility and it saves lives,” he emphasized.
