Within the framework of the 2025 Ordinary General Assembly of the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) , Miguel Ángel Martínez Millán, its president, commented on the actions carried out by Canacar in the transportation sector and made a strong call to the federal government to address the needs of transporters.

These actions and requests were summarized in six key points that directly impact the competitiveness and operation of the sector.

During his speech, Martínez Millán highlighted that freight transport is a pillar of Mexico’s economic development, contributing 3.8% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and moving more than 600 million tons of goods per year. However, he stressed that the sector faces critical challenges that require immediate attention.

Among the priority issues, the president of Canacar highlighted:

Road safety. He said that the agency has registered 10,000 units with the National Guard as part of the Balam Project and is holding meetings with authorities to improve the protection of operators and goods.

Training and professionalization. He explained that with 27 training centers in operation and three more to be authorized, Canacar seeks to reduce the deficit of more than 56 thousand operators through training schemes aligned with the federal government’s labor policy.

Regulatory issues. Martínez Millán called for clear rules and simplified procedures for the sector, demanding that any new regulation take into account the voice of transporters.

The fourth point regarding road infrastructure , the president of Canacar delivered to the Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT), Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, a document with the 146 most damaged road sections and six critical points previously discussed with the federal agency.

He also called for greater planning in the construction of access points to industrial parks and the creation of safe rest areas.

The fifth aspect mentioned was also the support for fleet renewal , for which financing and leasing schemes were proposed to renew the sector’s units, improving the safety, efficiency and sustainability of motor transport.

Finally, he requested collaboration with the government. In this regard, he reiterated Canacar’s willingness to work hand in hand with the federal administration for the benefit of the sector and the country.

SICT Commitment

In response, the head of SICT acknowledged the importance of motor transport in the national economy and promised to address the points raised by Canacar.

“Cargo transport is the backbone of national logistics. I appreciate that they have provided us with the document with the critical road sections and the list of toll booths with long waiting times,” he said.

Esteva Medina highlighted the progress of the “Bacheton Program,” focused on the conservation and maintenance of the federal highway network, and reported that this year the administration will begin the modernization of 10 trunk roads and the rehabilitation of five highways, with a goal of more than four thousand kilometers renovated by the end of 2030.

At the end of the meeting, Martínez Millán emphasized that the transport sector is key to the country’s growth and reiterated his commitment to continue promoting safe, efficient and competitive road transport.
