FedEx “conquers” the skies in Mexico

The American courier and package delivery company, FedEx, became the foreign cargo airline that moved the most merchandise in Mexico in regular international operations last year, reported the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC).

According to AFAC statistics, the largest express transport company in the world went from moving 69,140 tons to 78,319 tons, that is, a 13.3% year-on-year growth.

He also stated that this cargo airline achieved a market share of 16.3% compared to other airlines that arrive in the country during the mentioned period.

Similarly, AFAC reported that during the period from January to December 2024, only three cargo airlines registered growth, the remaining two were Lufthansa Cargo and Qatar Airlines.

The first handled 25,710 tons, compared to 23,640 tons in 2023, thus generating an increase of 8.7%, while the second transported 28,810 tons compared to 28,200 tons year-on-year, which left an increase of 2.2 percent.

It is worth noting that China Southern Airlines  has reactivated connectivity with Mexico that was interrupted by the pandemic.

While the sharpest fall was Cathay Pacific Airways , which closed last year with a decrease of 14.4%, going from moving 59,330 tons to 50,760 tons.

During 2024, foreign cargo airlines as a whole handled 480,400 tons of international cargo services, 2.1% more year-on-year.

As for Mexican companies participating in the international market, the organization reported that they closed the mentioned period with a movement of 177,800 tons, a decrease of 11.3% year-on-year.

The AFAC stated that it was Grupo Aeroméxico that obtained the greatest growth by moving 104,200 tons, which resulted in a growth of 14.5%, while the one that registered the greatest drop was AeroUnion with 35.3%, due to the fact that it ended the period with 16,877 tons against the 26,091 tons of 2023.
