Air cargo transported in Mexico last year showed an annual growth rate of 5.6%, with 1,263,585.6 tons, or 67,497 tons more than in 2023, according to data from the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) .

During this period, Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) led the top 10 of the airports that handled the most products.

The AFAC revealed that the domestic market totaled 391,667 tons, an annual increase of 2.3%, with AIFA (Santa Lucía) having the greatest growth with 357.2 percent.

At the international level, the increase was 7.2%, as it ended 2024 with 871,918.6 tons, 58,706.2 tons more than in 2023. The AIFA also led the growth in this segment with 136.2% more.

AIFA was the terminal that has grown the most in cargo handling, since from January to December 2024 it registered an increase of 140.8% against the compared period, due to the fact that it went from 185,733.1 tons to 447,341.2 tons transported (adding domestic and international cargo).

The one with the biggest drop continues to be the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) , whose drop was 46.4% in 2024 , this derived from the presidential decree that put an end to dedicated cargo at this terminal.

Therefore, from January to December of last year, 240,034.8 tons were transported, 207,852.4 tons less than in the same period compared.

“As of September 1, 2023, all regular and non-regular air transport operations, both domestic and international, exclusive of cargo, stopped landing at AICM. Mixed passenger and cargo operations remain at AICM,” AFAC stated.

In the top 10 of the main airports, Cancun dropped 6.8% , closing the period with 36,165.5 tons, 2,656 tons less; followed by San Luis Potosí with a handling of 27,500.4 tons , that is, 1,236.8 tons less, which meant a decrease of 4.3%; and Querétaro with a decrease of 3%, since it ended with 77,390.9 tons, 2,433.3 tons less.

AFAC stated that at the national level, the route with the greatest growth from January to December 2024 was the Monterrey-Mexico route, with an increase of 23.1 percent.
