The Mexican Railway Association (AMF) expects that by the end of this year there will be a 3% growth in total cargo movement , something similar to what the ARTF reported during the period from January to August of this year 2024.
Iker de Luisa, director of the organization, said that during the mentioned period, there was an annual increase of 3.22% in tons, while in tonne-kilometers it was 6 percent.
“I think we can close the year with these figures,” he said during his bi-monthly meeting.
According to the monthly report of the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) , during the period from January to August, 91.06 million tons were transported by rail, an increase of 3.22% year-on-year.
Of the total, 26.47 million tons corresponded to domestic traffic and 64.59 million tons to international traffic. Of the international traffic, 49.30 million tons were imported and 15.29 million tons were exported.
“Compared to the period January-August 2023, domestic traffic grew by 6.29%, international traffic grew by 2.02%, imports rose by 3.45% and exports decreased by 2.36 percent,” ARTF stated.
Regarding the movement of passengers by train, Iker de Luisa reported that with data from the ARTF, he said that the Maya Train is approaching 370 thousand trips from January to August, 25 thousand for the Chihuahua-Pacific, the Interoceanic with 60 thousand trips, the Mexico-Toluca train close to two million and the Buenavista-Cuautitlán suburban train totals 30 million.
“As the Mayan Train, Interoceanic Train and Mexico-Toluca Train are completed, these capacities will be increased,” he explained.
Regarding passenger railway projects, he mentioned that the AIFA-Pachuca train will have an investment of 50 billion pesos, will operate at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour (km/h) and with intermediate stations between Tizayuca and Temaxcalapa.
“It will be integrated with AIFA and Buenavista, it will not only be a Pachuca-AIFA but also with Mexico City, which gives it a more interesting audience,” he said.
Regarding Mexico-Querétaro, he commented that “so far there is no concrete proposal with which we can analyze.”
He recalled that, according to information from the federal government, this work will require 70 billion pesos for its construction, with a speed of up to 160 km/h, with an intermediate station in San Juan del Río, 15 stops from Buenavista to Querétaro, as well as the reconstruction of 77 bridges, 12 tunnels, two bypasses, as well as railway distributors.
In addition, there is a double passenger lane coexisting on the same right as the freight lanes.
