The federal government assured that the expansion of the suburban branch from the Lechería station to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA ) will begin operations in 2025 , two years after what was announced by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“The Mexico-AIFA train will be terminated, and we will also explain some situations with this train,” said Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, without giving further details.
It is worth mentioning that former President López Obrador announced that this train would begin operations at the end of 2023, later this year.
Manuel Gómez Parra, former general director of Railway and Multimodal Development (DGDFM) of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) , commented that they were working “intensely” so that operational tests would begin in May 2024 .
“We are working intensively along the 23 kilometers, progress is 50% and we still have some concerns, but we are staying in touch with people to continue to meet their need for information, so that they can organize their daily lives after the train starts. It will be two months of testing and in July operations will begin,” he said at the time.
SICT officials told this media that the expansion of the suburban train to AIFA will have a total cost of 25.8 billion pesos .
During her morning press conference, Claudia Sheinbaum explained that construction will also begin on the Mexico-Pachuca and Mexico-Querétaro trains, which they hope will generate nearly 600,000 new jobs.
He recalled that studies have already begun on these projects and the construction of the first one will be in April 2025.
He reiterated that the Maya Train will begin to move cargo , while they will finish Line K of the Interoceanic Train, without referring to the time frame in which this will happen.
Likewise, this morning, Claudia Sheinbaum signed the reforms on energy and passenger trains.
Andrés Lajous Loaeza, general director of the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF), said that the reform has already been approved by both Chambers and by two thirds of the local Congresses, “that is, it is already a constitutional reform, it is already part of the constitutional text.”
“In the reform to constitutional article 28, in such a way that the State recovers the possibility of operating trains on the country’s railroads and giving priority to passenger trains in particular. Now, with President Claudia Sheinbaum, the return of passenger trains will continue and be accelerated. The objective of this administration, in the following years, is to build three thousand kilometers of railroad tracks that allow the operation of passenger trains, and it is also a priority to strengthen the freight train service,” he said.
