The expected path of Hurricane Beryl for the following days has put the port of Corpus Christi and the port of Brownsville , in southeastern Texas, on alarm.
The authorities of Corpus Christi, the leading port in energy exports in the United States – the third largest oil exporter in the world – indicated this afternoon that they raised their state of preparedness to face hurricanes to level 2 (high preparation) .
“The port continues to monitor the possible impact scenarios of Hurricane Beryl in the Coastal Bend region and its surrounding areas,” the Port of Corpus Christi administrator reported.
Until 3:00 p.m. this Friday, July 5, Beryl was moving west-northwest at 24 km/h , at that time it was located on land 50 km northwest of Mérida, Yucatán, and 55 km east- southeast of Progreso, also in Yucatán, according to a report issued by the National Water Commission (Conagua) .
After entering Mayan land, Hurricane Beryl weakened and remains a tropical storm, without causing serious damage to the Yucatan Peninsula.
Conagua’s predictions on the path that the hurricane will follow indicate that it will cross the Gulf of Mexico and re-enter land on the southeastern coast of Texas , in the United States, next Monday, July 8, and possibly as category 1.
“The Captain of the Corpus Christi Port Sector (CoTP) of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) has established port condition control from the Colorado locks to the United States-Mexico border, including the port of Corpus Christi, effective 2:00 pm on Friday, July 5, 2024. Under this condition, owners, operators or agents of all self-propelled ocean-going vessels over 500 gross tons, all barges and their supporting tugs must review the USCG plans to depart or remain in port,” said the Corpus Christi port administrator.
For their part, the authorities of the port of Browsville indicated that the captain of the port of the United States Coast Guard has placed this maritime point in X-ray condition as of 2 pm today, July 5, 2024. This Condition indicates that hurricane force winds are possible within the next 48 hours.
“The port continues to monitor the path of Hurricane Beryl and has prepared for any possible impact the storm may have on our area. “We are working closely with emergency management officials to determine additional measures necessary to ensure public safety,” he said in a statement issued to the port community.
The port of Browsville maintains an important maritime connection between Mexico and the United States , where a large part of the merchandise that supplies different heavy industries destined for Mexico, such as heavy metals and machinery, arrives.
The Gulf of Mexico is an important body of water through which different goods are transported daily that require important industries interconnected in global value chains , both in the United States and Mexico. But goods from the primary sector are also transported and there is strong activity in the movement of containers with final goods that go directly to the consumer.
