Statistics from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM) indicate that in the first five months of 2024, Mexican ports have operated three million 739 thousand 587 20-foot containers (TEU) , which has meant growth at an annual rate. of 17.0% or 542 thousand 820 TEU more.
The port authority, in the hands of the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) , detailed that most of the containers operated in the period (99.3%) were registered in high-altitude services (import and export); while only about 23,761 TEU were cabotage services, exclusively through the port of Pichilingue.
The ports of the Mexican Pacific, which have received a greater number of containers due to the effect of nearshoring (relocation of production lines) in the country, have added two million 716 thousand 934 TEUs in the period January-May of this year or 17.9 % more than in the same period last year.
On this coast, the participation of Manzanillo stands out , with one million 606 thousand 682 TEUs operated until May (+12.9%); and Lázaro Cárdenas with 910 thousand 891 TEU (+35.5%).
While the ports of the Gulf of Mexico add 998 thousand 892 TEU or 12.2% more year-on-year, where Veracruz is the leader with 534 thousand 131 TEU (+18.8%) and Altamira with 364 thousand 949 TEU (+5.5%).
